Dear Mr. Robinson,
I have been a loyal member of the Free Republic since before the 2000 election. I have been a Conservative since the early days of Clinton. When I found this site, I thought "Thank God, people who think like me." I have continued to think this until the more recent days. Now, it seems that there are threads left and right bashing our President.
Why? There are things the President has done which I don't agree with but my loyality still lies with him. I am not sure if these "Bush-Bashers" fail to see the reality that with politics comes comprimise or it is something worse. I feel there is a cancer in the Free Republic. Some are eating their own.
I feel that some of these people are members of the dreaded democratic underground disguised as disgruntled conservatives. They are only here to stir up trouble. What's worse, they are doing just that. I am not sure what I think you should do.
As a conservative, I believe in our moral code but I also realize the reality of politics. I back our President but if he were doing something unsavory (like lying under oath,) I could not support him. This is unlike the left's clintonista dogma. What President Bush is doing is not betraying the conservative cause. He is using politics to confound the left. Those who do not understand this are either leftists themself or unable to separate themselves from their zealousness.
This is your show. You choose who gets to be a member and who does not. Those who break your rules are banished from the kingdom. I am not discouraging free speech, but this is free speech in your forum. These Bush-Bashers are brining us down. When this infighting happened in 1992, Bill Clinton got elected. let's not let that happen again.
Yours,
Big Guy and Rusty 99
How could I pass up this thread ? LOL
That's not quite true. Unlike a few of the Bush followers here, that cruise from thread to thread regardless of issues to attempt to minimize ANY and ALL problems surrounding his administration, I usually gravitate to the immigration threads where I feel that we are being sold down the river by this titanic invasion of millions. My position on immigration is well known, and I feel is one of the most dangerous issues facing this great nation. But no, I don't run from thread to thread regardless of issues just to slam President Bush. I don't hang around in cliques and don't have a group of little followers.
"That Ken H has real GRAVITAS."
I used to think this (about the du's), back when I supported Bush %100. He was elected, liberals were out, I was very happy. But then my opinion began to change slowly as I got tired of what some call "compromise" and I call "caving in".. The opinions of people I knew in real life began to change. That shocked me being in Texas. I had good impressions of him as a Governor, and still do, I think he did quite well by us (He practically saved the GOP in Texas, long story short, since Reconstruction, Democrats controlled everything until he came along). But I'm seeing more and more an administration that is either straddling the fence, or sliding on over to the left.
One thing I hope you and others avoid doing, is labeling those of us who make good arguments as trouble-makers. We are not. We are pointing out mistakes he is making. I think because many of us put a lot of our time, money, blood, sweat, and tears, into getting him elected, that we have more than earned the right to be disappointed and to make our disappointment known to our fellow Conservatives.
I get labeled as a Bush-Basher all the time for pointing out things, that if done by a liberal President, would have people here clamoring for impeachment, but because he is one of us, it's somehow okay. It's aggravating at times.
I will say this. I don't know anybody that is %100 happy with everything Bush has done and has condoned., whether it's education, PATRIOT, CFR, immigration, subsidies, abortion, ignoring the Saudi links to 9/11, his staff running around telling us it's inevitable we have to be victims, etc.
I don't understand it either. He has the pontential to kick some a**. He should use it. Comprimise never works.
I wonder when the big man himself will show up to put in his two cents?
90% of the so-called "Bush-bashing" is pointing out, how Bush says one thing and does another. The other 10% is pointing out the inaction by Bush on things he ought to be doing. As one, who criticizes Bush, I want him to do, what he said he was going to do. It's good for America, it's good for the GOP, it's good for Bush's re-election.
The mystery is why he's doing the things he is. There's no rhyme or reason to it. There's no "political necessity" to it. The total lack of decent reasons, for what he's doing is a big part in what's driving people here nuts.
Why did Bush come out for a Palestinian State after 9/11 and reward terrorism? Why is Bush saving Arafat's butt for 8 month or longer? It's against the Bush Doctrine. It doesn't make any sense.
You said it better than anybody else in this entire thread. Thanks.
It is driving us nuts. The man in office is not the man we helped elect, and he's liable to not be re-elected. If poll numbers were worth a hoot, his father would have served two terms, and George W. himself would have won by larger numbers in 2000 and not come down to a few idiots who can't read ballots in a certain county. If Bush were a Representative or a Senator, many people on FR would be referring to him as a RINO.
Isn't that splendid? I don't have any followers either. We have something in common.
Ronald Reagan signed the first state waiting period gun law in the nation
He proposed, pushed for and signed a blanket, no questions asked, amnesty for illegal aliens
He raised taxes that are still in force today and have cost all of us 500 billion bucks since first implemented
Reagan never abolished a single federal agency and his funding was at least to levels of inflation
Reagan pulled troops out of harms way when casualties were taken.
Reagan went on record in his 2nd term that the Department of education should not only remain but that it served a vital national interest
Reagan dropped abortion like a hot rock when he gained office
Reagan deserted Robert Bork when the confirmation got too hot to handle
Reagan publicly lobbied for the Brady Bill once he left office.
Reagan never seriously pursued" star wars" once the threat made the Soviets back down.
Reagan could have NEVER been successful if he had governed according to the caricature that has been created for him. If you are going to hold Reagan up as the standard that GW Bush must meet to be a "real conservative" have the decency to do it with the real record and not a dime store novel.
