"The Church is a target that the left media has been dying to bring down for YEARS"

You're right about that, and it could have been any Christian church. It just happened to be Catholic and so much the better for the media because the Catholic church is SO high profile and far reaching. It's like they caught the biggest fish in the lake.

"Where did the term, ‘Cheese-eating surrender monkeys’ originate ?" - Darlin'
"That may be an original of Jonah Goldberg. It is certainly his style." - Servant of the Nine
"I believe it was the show, "South Park"...you know, the one with the filthy mouth kids, and someone kills Kenny every week..." - gogeo

I found the answer in an old (but still timely) Jonah Goldberg column .... :) Inscrutable Racism About one-third down the page ...

"Where’s the French Anti-Defamation League Indeed, since the inception of this column, I have been adhering to Al Bundy's immortal fatwah, "It is good to hate the French." I have made The Simpsons-derived epithet "Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys" an accepted term in official diplomatic channels around the globe.

OK, maybe not, but if you ever do hear Kofi Annan refer to the Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys, I will deserve much of the credit. As it has been pointed out before in this space, time and again, the boulevards in Paris are lined with trees so Germans can always march in the shade. I have translated almost every single French phrase from hors d'oeuvres to "C'est la vie" to mean, "I surrender!" Or, "Yes, officer, the refugees are in my basement, I'll show you the way."

No one ever called me a racist for writing any of this. Is it because French people are white (often white with fear at the sound of German tourists getting off tour buses, but white nonetheless)? Are non-white people protected by a racism force field, shielding them from any cultural criticism or gentle ribbing? It's an interesting idea considering non-white cultures surely say some awful stuff about America. "

An excellant article as well as some interesting comments.
I especially appreciated this part:
To Americans, and I say this uncritically and without comment, Europe has never had any discernible Middle Eastern policy except to await the American position and then take a stance more favourable to the Arabs. This may sometimes be objectively correct policy, but it hasn't contributed much to the Middle Eastern peace process

...-snip-"...Where, in eight months since Sept. 11, has it acted unilaterally or impetuously? Given the provocation and America's immense military power, I know of no country that has ever acted with more conspicuous moderation and effectiveness"

Yes, when U.S. tourism dollars start to dry up we'll see an abrupt 180 in the tone of European whining. If you want to draw a clear distinction of the way both sides look at the world and will respond in any given situation just consider our respective revolutions. The battle cry of the U.S. Revolution was, Give me liberty. The battle cry of the French Revolution was, Give us bread. In all the years since nothing has changed. They were socialist then and they are socialist today.

I'm just saying IF the media REALLY cared about the children and the victums of child abuse they would address the WHOLE issue .. across the board

They are NOT doing this .. GEE why is that

And I agreed with you.
They are doing it just for the ratings.
But that doesn't make them wrong

THAT would actually be worthwhile....which is probably why it won't happen, although Fox has touched on it a little bit. They SHOULD cover that with more enthusiasm and effort than the Catholic church AND the Chandra Levy stories.

By keeping the sex abuse scandal story limited to the Catholic Church, they can portray it as a problem with religion. If they start exposing the sex abuse in schools and gyms and sports clubs and CPS and foster care and juvenile detention camps and Big Brothers then the readers will notice that is not a religion or education or athletic justice system problem, but a problem with tolerating PERVERTS ("gays") who will exploit each opportunity provided to them by tolerant parents and social workers and bosses....
The same press that is crucifying priests who abuse kids this year was criticizing the Boy Scouts last year for trying to keep sexual perversion out of its organization.

Stick to people with wood or metal boats. Liberals buy fiberglass.

HELLO ..............

Yes it does ... because if they REALLY cared as the claim they do .. they would address the WHOLE issue ..

They don't ..

The ONLY one that I have seen address the issue across the board is O'Reilly .. they rest of them have not

I've seen all three of them, 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, Tora Tora Tora and Pearl Harbor. The first two are great films about the war. The third is a love story played out at the time of Pearl Harbor. IMHO, the music and some of the special effects are worthwhile as are a couple of close ups of Josh Hartnet. LOL

No

The public is unwilling or unable to understand complex stories. if they tried to cover the whole issue, it would spread the focus. The public would get confused and bored and the story would die. It doesn't do any good to write over the heads of the audience.

Most people are willing to listen to 5 minutes ofd news before sorts and weather or read the headlines on the front page before going to the sports section or cartoons, that is all.

Oh I know that! It just that the bigger and more influential the church the better and with the Catholic church they think they've hit the motherlode.
