What do you guys make of this? From a magazine interview with co-scriptwriter Philippa Boyens:
Q: Will there be anything to help a novice find his/her way into The Two Towers, some recap of what has happened so far, or will we plunge right into it?
Philippa Boyens: Pretty much a big plunge, you might say - a rather large plunge! [Both laugh as if sharing a wicked, private joke.] - the deep breath before the plunge. Well, it's a terrible pun; and you'll understand it when you see it, but I think it's one of the most amazing openings ever - pure Peter Jackson!
Sounds like we're in for a whopper of an opening!
To: maquiladora
I did see that!
There was some discussion on TORN about what the plunge is...
That is could be Gandalf and the Balrog, or it could be Frodo... Or it could be Gollum...
What do you think? I don't think they would open with Gandalf... They will save him for the "surprise" appearance.
To: maquiladora
Just a theory--one of the best ways to provide a recap for the non-hobbithead might be for Gollum to Tell His Story. After all, he'll be a new character even to someone who's seen FOTR six times.
This would review the history of the Ring of Power, if we had a short section of Gollum hissing out his love of the Precious, his rage at the Baggins, and his fear of the Dark Lord. That'd catch the unitiated up, and give the initiated some story, too.

I'm not sure, they talk about a 'big plunge' and how it's pure Jackson,
and are confident to state that they think it's the most amazing open ever. So I can't really imagine the rope thing fitting that description. And it would seem strange to have the Gandalf/Balrog thing happening at that time....but it would fit the description as something amazing.
What do I think? I don't really know, but I intend to ask my friend to see if he can shed any light on it.
If I was to hazard a guess, and this really is a guess, I would say that the movie opens with Saruman staring into the Palantir, searching Middle Earth for the remains of the Fellowship, the camera zooms into the Palantir and seemlessly merges with a scene where we are high in the sky at a great height over the empty plains and suddenly start to drop downward till we zoom in on 3 little specks which grow to become the recognisable figures of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, the three hunters.
To: Mamzelle
Actually, that reminds me, there was a rumor that came out the of score recording sessions in London, back in August which said that Gollum featured in the opening of the movie.
I'd almost forgotten about that.

Soundtrack fans rejoice! The limited-edition Two Towers album adds to the regular release a second disc featuring the Lost Lothlorien Suite, plus previously unreleased tracks from FOTR sessions. The limited-edition version also includes a special booklet and leatherette packaging.

We'd all love to play Peter Jackson...!
Just to get the story going, I'd love to start not only with Gollum, but from his point of view. He could trail his knuckles in the slime as he stalks the Ring...and we could listen to his pathetic conversations with himself. It is a Tolkein theme--pity this wretch. He could witness Gandalf's descent into the Abyss, then trail Sam and Frodo, only to be captured by Faramir. By that time, the details of FOTR could be outlined for the poor confused non-veteran of Middle Earth.
I'm looking forward to Gollum...!

album--link? Amazon?
To: Mamzelle
I dont know if it has an Amazon page yet. It's not being released till the Dec 9th/10th, which is about 3 weeks later than was planned due to the recording sessions going way over the deadline.

Gollum works in an opener, but I have this image in my head that the story opens with the three hunters running... Because that is where we left the story.
I couldn't think of a way to make that into a plunge, but Maq, you have managed to turn that into a plunge! Not only the idea, but the choreography and cinematography too!

woops.

It's just what I can imagine in my head, and it's like what PJ would do. Remember the plunge from the top of Orthanc down to the pits?
To: maquiladora
Your head came up with a great scene!
52 days, 13 hours...

That was an interesting article, Maq. I'll have to show it to my daughter. She's looking forward to seeing the horses in TTT.

Remember the plunge from the top of Orthanc down to the pits? Oh boy do I remember that scene. I have iffy equilibrium anyway (since losing my hearing in my right ear) and it made me sick nearly every time.
My jedis and 2JD are outside working on their talan. The thing is going to be HUGE! At least 10'x10' with two storeys and is made with cut down cedar trees...the support posts are gigantic. They are cementing the posts into the ground right now.
The thing is going to actually be a room on stilts build around our large mimosa tree. The tree will actually come up through the middle of it and they'll have to climb the tree a tad to get up to the second story (like a lookout tower).

Are you going to post pics?

Hair, I asked my friend what he thought the plunge was in TTT. He seemed to think that it was
Gandalf's fall in Moria! I asked him if he was sure and he said:
"I'm not sure of it, no, but I'm pretty certain." The only other bit of info I got from him today was the the very last "big" event in the movie (but maybe not the final actual scene) is "Aragorn getting Anduril and deciding to go on the Paths of the Dead".

Neat neat!
51 days 10 hours....
To: HairOfTheDog
51?! Wow...thats nothing!
The days sure are flying....I got a new Tolkien book to pass the time yesterday, Christopher Tolkien's History of Middle Earth Volume XXII: The People's Of Middle Earth.
