What Does The Current Version Have That The Beta Does Not?

Posted on 03/26/2002 9:49:03 AM PST by John Robinson

I will wrap up the beta and install it this weekend.

What necessary functions are available in the current version of Free Republic's software that are not available in the beta?

The comment number link behind the name and the date/time is bright because of the color, and kindof confuses my eye... makes the name hard to find. (Does that make sense?)

Or... Your new "Read Discussion | Read Comment" is very clear, but could either replace the numbered comment link (combine it with the comment number?) or replace the hotlink in the title... not sure we need four links to two places.

I love the comment ____ of ____ addition... can I can tell in self-search if the conversation has continued past my last post... even if not addressed to me. Great addition.

Oops... my last post was supposed to be addressed to you!

And I like the Arial font... my example above is for layout only, and I don't know how to change the font to match your current style.

The extra links are for "backward compatibility." I've been thinking about removing them in favor of the "Read" links at the bottom and soak the verbal abuse for a few weeks until everybody gets used to clicking the new link.

I'll try out your suggested arrangement. Thanks.

I had that disabled in the beta Profiles until I could write a new routine. The new "Find in Forum" has been much improved.

Maybe. However, there are a few issues to resolve before it will come back. If I can resolve those before the weekend, then it will be included. If not, it should be the following weekend.

In the interim, in the beta, each forum has a Search Forum page from which you can click to "Find User". A bit more clicking than I would like (that will change.)

John, is there any way you can code an automatic slap for people who don't do a search before they post? I love the new version where I can view only the news (rather than the articles on the dark side) but these multiple posts are annoying. Maybe a large warning or a not so gentle reminder on the posting page?

Thank you for all of your hard work. You are appreciated.

Any chance the Poll question in the sidebar could appear below the other selected topics? Or can we move it already and I just need a map to guide me?

I have only chosen Breaking News and my State News to appear there, But I now have to scroll down past the poll question before I see Breaking News, and I would like it to be the most prominent.

Or perhaps the question could appear at the top until we answer it? Then it sinks down?

The beta software you've designed looks much better now. It works pretty good, and it's pleasing to the eye, within reason. The current design is good, but if we have to change, the new stuff will be a good replacement.

I also like the new notification for new posts on our state boards, and the fact that it includes the latest post is really neat. The blue color for the bar is nice too.

However, the only cosmetic changes I'd like would be an option to change the font of the sidebars and topic menus to something less annoying -- like the nice font used to display the forum list in the upper-left hand corner. Also, it's be nice if you included an option to hide that flag background -- it's all nice and patriotic, and all, but it'd be nice if one had the option to hide and show it at pleasure, and one to disable the thin boxes around every element in the center of the sceen.

I apologize for my incessant whining, but those tiny little things were getting on my nerves, and I feel a little better after ranting about them. Anyway, the software's pretty good and I'm glad that you're working so hard to make FR so much better! Thanks!

...a touch more space available in this third column

...better to have the text of articles, in the teasers, be a smaller font than the title

Agreed.

JRob,

I want to express my support for a [Dr.] Condoleezza Rice topic. I also nominate myself and Section9 to be two of the admins for it.

How were you wanting us to submit this information to you? Via this thread? via FReepmail?

short name? Condi Rice, maybe?

full title? Dr. Condoleezza Rice (I wouldn't suggest using NSA as a part, since she may be moving up in the Administration soon, which would require the list name to be adjusted

description? Threads that have Dr. Condoleezza Rice as a focal point, regardless of nature of the thread (personal, professional, whatever).

i live in a cave and power my laptop with old truck batteries donated by Pete-R-Bilt.
these bright screens are killing me, as they attract the rodents, making my asthma flare up...

it's a sad story... css was one way of putting a nice dark doom-like appearance to the threads.
