Good for her .. I wish more would speak out about how they feel
Without liberty, the pursuit of happiness is meaningless....and without life, the word liberty means nothing.
I see what he is saying as 'without the highest of regard for life, we are unable to utilize or recognize any other rights. Without life and by extension the other unalienable rights, how can we possible self-govern? Even the Founders said that the form of government they had provided was only of value to a religious people.
But then, that's just me :) And I'm quite prejudiced--Dr. Keyes is the person who turned my thinking on abortion around...nobody else could...NOBODY! And he did it using the Declaration and the Constitution--at the time, I wouldn't have accepted any religious reasons. And for someone to change my mind, after I had supposedly weighed all factors, is saying something--because I fought it.
Keyes is a very smart man and to be honest .. I think he can offer alot more being on TV because he can speak more freely about issues that need to be address .. Because you know if he was President he wouldn't be able to .. politics and all
I don't disagree with you or him on this issue .. he is right .. I totally agree
But I am speaking as a country as a whole .. and a world as a whole .. and neither one are ready for an Alan Keyes .. the man is very strong in his beliefs and as much as I admire and agree with him .. it just won't work .. at least for now
Myself, I was raised in a Democrat household by parents who thought FDR was the second coming!! I never could get into the Democrat mode......I loved history and read constantly all through highschool....and it just didn't add up--all his 'good works' vs the Constitution! That is what made me a Republican.
And then, when the Republicans changed, I did, too. I am now free to vote for whomever I believe best represents what the Country needs as I see it.
That was one of the things that impressed me so much about him. He is a devout Christian man, but he is smart enough to know that that is not the best approach to take when addressing the general public, so he relies on the documents of the founders, which themselves give great credit to the Creator. It's hard not to pay attention unless you're one of those people who'd just as soon throw out the Constitution and all our history built on it and on the Bill of Rights. The documents speak volumes about today's issues.
Abortion is an issue that splits the Republican party right down the middle. Polls among Pubbies vary from 45/55 to 55/45. Any Candidate who is seen as being serious about doing something about Abortion, either way is gonna lose.
Until public opinion crysatalizes to at least 30/70 or 70/30 anyone who seems to be ready to actually do anything is doomed.

One of the most heartening things we had going at Fire Talk was getting new people coming into the forum.....and yes, there were a lot of drive-by liberals....but, you know what....with preserverance, we were able to get some of them turned around, too.....facts have a funny way of getting to people--especially when you provide names, dates, links, to backup everything you're telling them.
Back to blacks.....we had a couple of fellas that dropped in from time to time, and one guy, we called Mechanic....at first he was rather aloof and mostly listened, though he would type once in a while. I could tell by his voice, when he did speak, that he was black, but you really had to strain to catch this.
Anyhow, the FReepers tried to remain civil....and respond to questions....and finally we got him talking, and asking, and talking some more and asking more.....and we wound up with a really swell fella--was out of Houston--told us it was gonna be a tough sell--knowing his neighborhood...but he was gonna do it. I'm not saying he was a Keyes fan [the majority on Fire Talk weren't, though there was a sizeable number that were]--he was actually a conservative who found out it was ok to be conservative! And while I don't appreciate that handle anymore because of the bastardization of the word, it sure as hell beats liberal any day of the week.
I don't know what happened to him after Fire Talk shut down.
But we have to deal with this country as a whole .. not just my beliefs
As wrong as abortion is .. the fact is it will never go away even if it is outlawed .. abortion has been going on for centuries
I have also notice with this country (in general) that you can't just shove an issue down people throats .. they will put their backs up against the wall and close their ears
HOWEVER, I have ALSO noticed that more women are becoming pro-life .. why .. because they have LEARNED that abortion is not the right why
Don't get me wrong I admire these folks that carry sign and fight for the rights of the unborn .. but I think the way to win this fight is to educate people of the facts and the truth
For example ..I've told this story before but maybe not to you .. I have a friend who didn't think there was a big deal about Partial Birth Abortion .. after I picked up my jaw I asked him if he knew what it was .. he didn't and I explained what it was .. He was then sickened and thought it was wrong .. so that is why I think the best way to win this fight is by educating people
Which is also why I think Alan Keyes will do more good for this country being on TV .. he can reach more people
