Agreed. I don't read a lot of modern SF&F because so much of it seems to include sexual situations, not to advance the plot or help define characters, but just because the author wants to titillate (or prove they're "adult").

I can't recall the author's name right now. But a few weeks back I picked up a new SF&F work at the library. On page 4 the main character's girlfriend told him to f-off. I went no further.

I mean, I'm certainly no prude, but it that was character development, I didn't want to get to know them.

There is good new stuff, really. It depends what you want... I find that there is some stuff that is 100% good, with no profanity or unnecessary sexual overtones, more that is mostly ok, or at least realistic - I mean, soldiers and sailors are going to swear, wherever they are, but three year olds, unless they're raised in a really bad enviroment, aren't - and a ton of crap. You have to know what you're looking for, or know people who have good taste, or do tons of research online, looking for recommendations from authors you trust. It's hard work, but any time I discover someone like Connie Willis, or even a "mostly-good" like John Ringo, it's worth it.
