Although as I recall the vaunted elves of Lothlorien weren't able to do much with Gollum either, so I don't see how the Mirkwoodians can be held THAT much to blame. ;^)

Hope that they aren't the ones guarding Robert Blake in LA -- you might as well hand an inmate the keys as expect the Mirkwood elves to keep them locked up! I guess the only responsible Mirkwood Elf was Legolas, so naturally he wants to go to the Greyhavens and ship out.
