LOL, I am so with you, Jen.
I KNEW that we wouldn't take best adapted screenplay, but it still was one of the ones that made me angriest. Not only does it slam Tolkien himself, since the movie was so faithful to his work, but it slams the idea of being faithful to one's source material. After all, if the screenplay that most deviates from the original material is ALWAYS the one that gets the awards, that means that obviously Hollywood is much, much better at telling a story than the writers are.
Bah! I hate the academy. In weird sort of way, I'm getting some satisfaction that because of them snubbing LOTR I can continue to despise the academy-even moreso than I did before.

There are other forces at work beside the will of evil, Jen. We were
meant to lose Best Picture... and Best Adapted Screenplay... and Best Director... And
that is an encouraging thought.
Don't worry Frodo, I didn't feel better when Gandalf tried this line of reasoning either.
To: HairOfTheDog
Wonder if Frodo ever got the urge to slap Gandalf upside his head? :)
To: Overtaxed
He sure looked....confused...after that line, lol. I would dearly love to know what he would have said if Gandalf hadn't jumped up right then to take them down that passageway.
I will say that there is something to be said for not being too "accepted" by the Hollywood elite. And I think this crew is in it for the fans of Tolkien, not for the Hollywood movers and shakers.

Actually I think the forces of evil won this one. Apparently the ABM smear campaign wasn't vicious enough. Next year we know to heat up the rhetoric a little more... rats, was our involvement with that supposed to be a secret?

"Yeah? Well, I was meant to toast you to a cinder, hobbit-boy! Take that! And next time, don't mess with Gandalf the Gray!"

Boromir: "Hey if you guys are going to fight, can I have the Ring?"
To: Overtaxed
No, Boromir's been skwered by Legolas, who misunderstood Aragorn's instruction to help defuse the situation to mean that he was supposed to start shooting people. He aimed at Gimli but forgot to aim lower and the arrow bounced off the Dwarf's helm; but Boromir was hit straight on and promptly went into a bizarre rendition of Hamlet's death speech.
Hey, it could happen!

Gimli: "Never shoot at a Dwarf!" and charges, slicing Legolas in two with one sweep of his ax. Hehehe. Another Elf bites the dust.
To: Overtaxed
When the King of Mirkwood hears the news of his son's demise (don't ask how since at this rate nobody's getting out of the Mines alive), he marchs his army on the Lonely Mountain, seeking revenge. A vicious, three-sided battle between the Elves, Dwarves, and the Men of Dale ensues and ends with the Eagles and Spiders making a pact to break up the fighting and eat the survivors.

Then the orcs of Moria leave the mines and march on Lothlorien and Mirkwood.
