There is a war going on... and Denthor's duty is be on the walls fighting. Not dissolved in self-pity Boromir, that's why your daddy isn't king.
To: Overtaxed
Absolutely... for in the fires of trials and tribulations is character known. Boromir was revealed. Denethor was revealed. Faramir was revealed. And of the three, Faramir was the best... and the people knew it.
To: carton253
And Faramir was only "Adequate." Go figure .
To: Overtaxed
Oh, I don't know about that. I've come 180 degrees on Faramir. He is a good man who would have made a good steward. Gandalf believed it. So did Aragorn. I consider Aragorn a good and shrewd judge of character.
Faramir was no Aragorn, but of the three, I think Faramir (and remember he was still young) had good things in side of him. Those good things would have only improved with age.

:) I guess you missed that discussion where "Faramir" is Elvish for "Adequate Jewel."
To: Overtaxed
Yes, I did... See, miss a day, miss a lot...
To: Overtaxed
But that pretty much sums up Denethor's feeling about Faramir when compared to Boromir. What does Boromir stand for in Elvish?
To: carton253
Boromir="Faithful Jewel"
To: Overtaxed
Wow! That is revealing.
To: carton253
That's why I'm not very sypathetic towards Denethor...he's always giving poor Faramir the shaft.

Another thing that overwhelms me in this chapter is the maturity of Pippin. It's a far cry from the young hobbit sitting in the tub singing a bathing song. It is Pippin that saves the life of Faramir. There is this young hobbit, giving commands to Beregond and seeking out Gandalf.
What a good man the fires or trial reveals in Pippin.
To: carton253
Don't cha just love the little guy? He may not be out getting a piece of the Nazgul Lord, but to me saving Faramir is more important. He's just as brave as Merry at the Last Battle when he stands beside Beregond on the front lines and gets his troll.
To: carton253
Yes, this is truly Pippin's finest hour.
Good morning everyone! I'm just now sitting down with coffee and a coddled egg. I'm at the point where Faramir first meets Frodo in my reading. From the picture I've seen from the movie, it should be a great scene. I especially like the part where Sam stands in front of Faramir and tells him that if he thinks Frodo killed Boromir, he's got no sense! And the Men standing around smiling at little Sam, who is standing face to face with a sitting Faramir.
To: Overtaxed
Gandalf knew what he was doing when he planned to use Hobbits to work his plan.
To: 2Jedismom
LOL. I can just see Sam smacking Faramir upside his head!

My brother has the audio tapes of the books (they are very good) and I've been listening to The Two Towers starting with the Taming of Smeagol (of course) Anyway, I've just finished listening to that part you mentioned. It was excellent.

Sam would get a little riled if he thought his master was being abused.
Plus, I wonder what it must have been liked for the hobbits to be consistently dismissed just because of your size. It happens more to Merry more the others... (yet Gimli is never dismissed because of his size, but then again men had more dealings with dwarves then hobbits) but Sam and Frodo must feel it in this company of men. Hobbits are every bit as courageous and honorable and smart as the men of Gondor, but because of their size, they are diminished in the eyes of the men.
If it wasn't for the fact of Sam's size, I wonder how the men would have reacted to Sam's little tirade. (And Sam was right... who were these men to question Frodo so?)
To: carton253
It's a gift of sorts to Frodo and Sam, I think...
Right before they must enter Mordor, they have a short break to gather their strength emotionally and physically (Faramir provides them with dried fruits and such). I am so grateful to Faramir every time I read that they are eating the fruits! LOL
(I know, I'm silly and get really wrapped up in the books! By the time they reach Mount Doom, I'm ready to sleep for 2 weeks! LOL)
To: carton253
(And Sam was right... who were these men to question Frodo so?)Guardians of the realm Frodo and Sam were trespassing in? Faramir had every right to question odd travelers lurking the border between their land and Mordor! In fact, he bent the rules... he was supposed to bring them before Denethor.

yet Gimli is never dismissed because of his size, but then again men had more dealings with dwarves than hobbits Also hobbits don't go around swinging mean-looking axes.
