The New Hobbit Hole

Posted on 03/14/2002 5:07:26 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The New Hobbit Hole

Concerning Hobbits

The New Hobbit Chronicles

This is a continuation of the infamous thread New Zealander Builds Hobbit Hole originally posted on January 26, 2001 by John Farson, who at the time undoubtedly thought he had found a rather obscure article that would elicit a few replies and die out. Without knowing it, he became the founder of the Hobbit Hole. For reasons incomprehensible to some, the thread grew to over 4100 replies. It became the place for hobbits and friends of hobbits to chit chat and share LoTR news and views, hang out, and talk amongst ourselves in the comfort of familiar surroundings.

In keeping with the new posting guidelines, the thread idea is continuing here, as will the Green Dragon Inn, our more structured spin-off thread, as soon as we figure out how to move all the good discussion that has been had there. As for the Hobbit Hole, we will just start fresh, bringing only a few mathoms such as the picture above with us to make it feel like home, and perhaps a walk down memory lane:

Our discussion has been light:

It very well may be that a thread named "New Zealander builds Hobbit hole" will end up being the longest Tolkien thread of them all, with some of the best heartfelt content... Sorry John, but I would have rather it had been one with a more distinguished title!… post 252 - HairOfTheDog

However, I can still celebrate, with quiet dignity, the fact that what started as a laugh about some wacko in New Zealand has mutated and grown into a multifaceted discussion of the art, literature, and philosophy that is Tolkien. And now that I've managed to write the most pompous sentence of my entire life, I agree, Rosie… post 506 - JenB

Hah! I was number 1000!! (Elvish victory dance... wait, no; that would be too flitty) … post 1001 - BibChr

Real men don't have to be afraid of being flitty! Go for it. – post 1011 – HairOfTheDog

Seventeen years to research one mystical object seems a bit excessive… post 1007 - JenB

Okay...who's the wise guy who didn't renew Gandalf's research grant?… post 1024 – Overtaxed

To the very philosophical:

…Judas Iscariot obviously was a good man, or he wouldn't have been chosen to be one of the Apostles. He loved Jesus, like all of the Apostles, but he betrayed him. Yet without his betrayal, the Passion and Crucifixion would never have occurred, and mankind would not have been redeemed. So without his self-destruction infinite good would not have been accomplished. I certainly do not mean this to be irreverant but it seems to me that this describes the character of Gollum, in the scenes so movingly portrayed above… Lucius Cornelius Sulla

To fun but heartfelt debates about the integrity and worth of some of the characters…

…Anyone else notice how Boromir treats the hobbits? He's very fond of them but he seems to think of them as children - ruffling Frodo's hair, calls them all 'little ones'. He likes them, but I don't think he really respects them… post 1536 - JenB

Yes... Tolkien told us not to trust Boromir right off the bat when he began to laugh at Bilbo, until he realized that the Council obviously held this hobbit in high esteem. What a pompous dolt… post 1538 - HairOfTheDog

…I think almost every fault of his can be traced directly back to his blindness to anything spiritual or unseen. He considers the halflings as children, because that is what they look like. He considers the only hope of the ring to be in taking it and using it for a victory in the physical realm. He cannot see what the hobbits are truly made of, he cannot see the unseen hope of what the destruction of the ring might mean--the destruction of Sauron himself, and he cannot see the unseen danger that lies in the use of the ring itself… I just feel sorry for Boromir--he is like a blind but honorable man, trying to take the right path on the road but missing the right path entirely because he simply cannot see it… post 1548 - Penny1

Boromir isn't a jerk, he's a jock… post 2401 – Overtaxed

-----------------------------------------

Oh, I think by the time Frodo reaches the Cracks, he's not even himself anymore! I think he's not only on the brink of a dangerous place physically, he's on the brink of losing himself completely during the exchange with Gollum. But for some reason, the take-over isn't complete till he actually has to throw the Ring in. The person speaking to Gollum is not Frodo, but the "Wheel of Fire" that Sam sees. After the Ring is destroyed, Frodo not only comes back to himself, but comes back with the unbearable (to him) knowledge of what it's like to be completely without compassion. I think that's why it's so important to him to be compassionate in the Shire… post 2506 - 2Jedismom

…Regarding Frodo's compassion... it's a little too much at the end. Even Merry tells him that he's going to have to quit being so darn nice. But you're right. He's learned a lesson about evil that very few ever learn since it wasn't an external lesson but an internal one. (Those kinds of lessons have the greatest impact) Not only did he totally succumb to it, but he was rather ruthless to my little Smeagol… post 2516 - carton253

Well that Frodo was a big mean bully! (to Smeagol)… post 2519 – Overtaxed

So as you can see, everything JRR Tolkien (and Peter Jackson) is welcome here in our New Row, our soon-to-be familiar New Hobbit Hole…; philosophy, opinion, good talk and frequent silliness.

You know what... I don't care why. I don't give a flying leap why they flew those planes into our building. I will leave that up to the historians. Right now, I care about never letting it happen again.

I don't think a war to end all terror is foolhardy. I think it is necessary. Hopefully, that doesn't make me a good German.

Since I don't have the time to really get into this debate, (time and work interfere) I will have to let it go at that. I have noted your opinion and thank you for it.

That's where all the loot is stashed.

This sounds so fun! A little dream society. Sigh.

Hey, you could also put me in charge of BARGAIN FINDING! I did a great job of finding a bargain in little boys shoes yesterday!! And to top it off, they are shoes I've been looking for for about 2 years now and almost bought them online paying full price!

Here they are!

The webpage that is selling these have them listed as on sale for $29. I bought the boys both two pairs in 2 sized (four pairs each iow) for $4.47 each!!

Now I know some of you might think they are goofy, but I think they are completely cool and Matthew and Josh just look adorable in them! Like Arther, you know? On the show "Arther"? And McGee...in the show "McGee and Me"! Sooooo cute!

As soon as I can, I'll take a picture of them in them and you'll see. Too cute!

And have you asked yourself why?

ACK! Please clarify. You're not saying it was our fault, surely?

Again I say....ACK!!!

Whoops, I forgot to tell you happy birthday. Well, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!

What does one get for the Dwarf that has everything?

Eewww, here's a thought I just had and it is too terrible not to share: do Dwarf husbands ever get their wives Dwarven lingerie?

Since I have the Silmarillion in my little hands today... Regarding Orcs:

But of those unhappy ones who were ensnared by Melkor little is known of a certainty. For who of the living has descented into the pits of Utumno, or has explored the darkness of the counsels of Melkor? Yet this is held true by the wise of Eressea, that all those of the Quendi who came into the hands of Melkor, ere Utumno was broken, were put there in prison, and by slow arts of cruelty were corrupted and enslaved; and thus did Melkor breed the hideous race of the Orcs in envy and mockery of the Elves, of whom they were afterwards the bitterest foes. For the Orcs had life and multiplied after the manner of the Children of Iluvatar; and naught that had life of its own, nor the semblance of life, could ever Melkor make since his rebellion in the Ainulindale before the Beginning: so say the wise. And deep in their dark hearts the Orcs loathed the Master whom they served in fear, the maker only of their misery. This it may be was the vilest deed of Melkor, and the most hateful to Iluvatar.

I also got both boys a new pair of Levi's 550s each...Joshua is finally old enough to wear the 4 Slim (with the cuffs rolled up once). It's a good thing, because Matthew put on his best jeans just a while ago and suddenly (and I mean it) they are an inch above his ankles!!

So I'm frantically drying his new jeans. We're having lunch with Steve again, Thanksgiving Party at work.

Yes, that needs some... clarifying, I'd say. Personally, like carton, I couldn't care less why they did it, I want to get rid of them all so they don't do it again. There is no valid reason for what they did, therefore their motivations are irrelevant.

Good choice in handguns, ma'am

Thanks!... Both were gifts from my father. The .357 for my 21st birthday, and the Airweight a few Christmases ago when I was starting to carry more often.

I never keep the rounds for my CCW more than a year... that may be overly pessimistic of me, but I figure, if I need, I need it...

That is the worry that has been building in my mind. I don't know if they are still good until I fire them.

my CCW is a ParaOrdnance P-12.45...

My hands are too small to hold a .45 properly. I can shoot them... but the grip is just too big for it to be a good gun for me.

I will look for the CorBon rounds for both guns. My friend can't replace the bullets I have because he retired from the loading business. What a tragedy that was for me. He used to give me thousands of rounds at a time for free. What a great thing that was. I have never had to buy bullets before. I just used the last 500 box of his the last time I went shooting. :~(

Regarding the Glasers... Have you ever actually shot something with them? - I ask because my same friend (same friend with the loading business later) bad-talked them after an experience he had on patrol as a deputy. He was called to shoot a sow pig that had been hit by a car. He shot it at point-blank range in the head with glasers and it jumped up and ran off. He said he never used them again after that. But we did acknowledge that they are not intended for used in hard bony areas like pig skull, but instead for soft tissue areas. What do you think?

That is the most important part of this, I think. I agree that this is the vilest deed of all that Morgoth did.

G'nad can be in charge of our military, RM can be in charge of the kitchen, 2J can run the school, Jen can be our resident Middle-Earth historian, I'll go ahead and set up a church for those who want one, RWRF can be in charge of our banking system, Hair can watch over our animals, Corin can be our PR guy, carton can be in charge of our foreign policy, Sam can fish, OT can be our resident mad scientist (maybe we can even build her a little tower), Rosie can be in charge of entertainment, Bear can be the network administrator, and everyone else can find a niche they would like to fill, and fill it.

I love your plan ksen! - Do we have to wait for the country to go down the tubes? - Or can we just find an island someplace and declare our independence now?

Amen! I don't care why the Germans thought they had to kill the Jews. I don't care why Moussolini thought he had to take over the world. I don't care why the Japanese thought bombing Pearl Harbor justified.

Their motives mean diddly squat to me. Call me simplistic, call me narrow-minded... I don't care. I have read the terrorists writing, (give me 18 months and I'll be able to read it in Arabic) and I know what they are saying. What they say is why I will fight. Because they aren't stopping until we are defeated. And I won't loose this war. Not to them.

I just closed on a hundred acre spread in Southern Missouri...beautiful country... there's about 3,000 acres of timber around it with parcels for sale... I wouldn't mind anchoring a Shire enclave...

Sounds good to me!

I guess I'm simplistic too. I believe there are evil people in the world and the best way to improve the place is to get rid of them. And I think the President agrees.
