The New Hobbit Hole

Posted on 03/14/2002 5:07:26 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The New Hobbit Hole

Concerning Hobbits

The New Hobbit Chronicles

This is a continuation of the infamous thread New Zealander Builds Hobbit Hole originally posted on January 26, 2001 by John Farson, who at the time undoubtedly thought he had found a rather obscure article that would elicit a few replies and die out. Without knowing it, he became the founder of the Hobbit Hole. For reasons incomprehensible to some, the thread grew to over 4100 replies. It became the place for hobbits and friends of hobbits to chit chat and share LoTR news and views, hang out, and talk amongst ourselves in the comfort of familiar surroundings.

In keeping with the new posting guidelines, the thread idea is continuing here, as will the Green Dragon Inn, our more structured spin-off thread, as soon as we figure out how to move all the good discussion that has been had there. As for the Hobbit Hole, we will just start fresh, bringing only a few mathoms such as the picture above with us to make it feel like home, and perhaps a walk down memory lane:

Our discussion has been light:

It very well may be that a thread named "New Zealander builds Hobbit hole" will end up being the longest Tolkien thread of them all, with some of the best heartfelt content... Sorry John, but I would have rather it had been one with a more distinguished title!… post 252 - HairOfTheDog

However, I can still celebrate, with quiet dignity, the fact that what started as a laugh about some wacko in New Zealand has mutated and grown into a multifaceted discussion of the art, literature, and philosophy that is Tolkien. And now that I've managed to write the most pompous sentence of my entire life, I agree, Rosie… post 506 - JenB

Hah! I was number 1000!! (Elvish victory dance... wait, no; that would be too flitty) … post 1001 - BibChr

Real men don't have to be afraid of being flitty! Go for it. – post 1011 – HairOfTheDog

Seventeen years to research one mystical object seems a bit excessive… post 1007 - JenB

Okay...who's the wise guy who didn't renew Gandalf's research grant?… post 1024 – Overtaxed

To the very philosophical:

…Judas Iscariot obviously was a good man, or he wouldn't have been chosen to be one of the Apostles. He loved Jesus, like all of the Apostles, but he betrayed him. Yet without his betrayal, the Passion and Crucifixion would never have occurred, and mankind would not have been redeemed. So without his self-destruction infinite good would not have been accomplished. I certainly do not mean this to be irreverant but it seems to me that this describes the character of Gollum, in the scenes so movingly portrayed above… Lucius Cornelius Sulla

To fun but heartfelt debates about the integrity and worth of some of the characters…

…Anyone else notice how Boromir treats the hobbits? He's very fond of them but he seems to think of them as children - ruffling Frodo's hair, calls them all 'little ones'. He likes them, but I don't think he really respects them… post 1536 - JenB

Yes... Tolkien told us not to trust Boromir right off the bat when he began to laugh at Bilbo, until he realized that the Council obviously held this hobbit in high esteem. What a pompous dolt… post 1538 - HairOfTheDog

…I think almost every fault of his can be traced directly back to his blindness to anything spiritual or unseen. He considers the halflings as children, because that is what they look like. He considers the only hope of the ring to be in taking it and using it for a victory in the physical realm. He cannot see what the hobbits are truly made of, he cannot see the unseen hope of what the destruction of the ring might mean--the destruction of Sauron himself, and he cannot see the unseen danger that lies in the use of the ring itself… I just feel sorry for Boromir--he is like a blind but honorable man, trying to take the right path on the road but missing the right path entirely because he simply cannot see it… post 1548 - Penny1

Boromir isn't a jerk, he's a jock… post 2401 – Overtaxed

-----------------------------------------

Oh, I think by the time Frodo reaches the Cracks, he's not even himself anymore! I think he's not only on the brink of a dangerous place physically, he's on the brink of losing himself completely during the exchange with Gollum. But for some reason, the take-over isn't complete till he actually has to throw the Ring in. The person speaking to Gollum is not Frodo, but the "Wheel of Fire" that Sam sees. After the Ring is destroyed, Frodo not only comes back to himself, but comes back with the unbearable (to him) knowledge of what it's like to be completely without compassion. I think that's why it's so important to him to be compassionate in the Shire… post 2506 - 2Jedismom

…Regarding Frodo's compassion... it's a little too much at the end. Even Merry tells him that he's going to have to quit being so darn nice. But you're right. He's learned a lesson about evil that very few ever learn since it wasn't an external lesson but an internal one. (Those kinds of lessons have the greatest impact) Not only did he totally succumb to it, but he was rather ruthless to my little Smeagol… post 2516 - carton253

Well that Frodo was a big mean bully! (to Smeagol)… post 2519 – Overtaxed

So as you can see, everything JRR Tolkien (and Peter Jackson) is welcome here in our New Row, our soon-to-be familiar New Hobbit Hole…; philosophy, opinion, good talk and frequent silliness.

"We still have the Extended addition to look forward to next month!

I can't wait either...But FOTR is pretty hard hitting, usually...It's far and away my favorite of the three books...Good night all, I'm exhausted after the 10 hour drive from Charleston.

What a piece of work is a sneak!

Ah, well... can we make Hair write her own Dark and Stormy story? I refuse to start with those words. I already have my opening sentence - or a least on possibility: "There was a Dragon on the Parkway East".

So who's gonna write about a group of conservative Tolkien-fans who hang out on FR all day?

Oh! A Thriller! :)

Good Morning, everyone.

But they sure can put on the 'pitiful face' when fussed at, can't they?

For sure! (And she needed it big time this weekend...she was NOT a good dog by any stretch of the imagination.)

LOTR Risk game will be shipping on October 31st

That sounds like fun! We used to play Risk for HOURS when I was a kid...though if the board is a Middle Earth map, I may be tempted to hang it on the wall between games. ;-)

You know that guy in Sunday school that I offended a couple of weeks ago? That psychologist? Didn't I tell you about that and that I didn't really want to go back because I could tell he was pretty mad?

Well, I went back anyway and shouldn't have! He came up to me and really gave it to me, told me I didn't know what I was talking about and on and on. Steve took me by the arm and said "Let's go" because I was starting to cry. He brought me home and has now gone back to get the boys.

I am very sorry to hear that 2JM. There is never any excuse for a Sunday School teacher to behave that way. I hope Steve went and "spoke" to him.

I would let the Pastor know how one of his teachers is behaving. If the teacher did that to you, odds are he has behaved that way in the past. That behavior is not a good testimony. What if an unbelieving visitor had witnessed that incident? Chances are they would leave and say they gave Christianity a chance, but who needs it.

TO STEVE: Kim needs a new whistle! and some chocolate.

Come to find out later on, he's a deacon...high up in the church "leadership" and a bigwig on TV (which I never watch tv, you know).

Still no excuse for his behavior. Do the Deacons run your church, or is the Pastor in charge? With that outburst the guy forfeited his ability to be a deacon, at least if you want to maintain the standards set forth in I Timothy 3:1-13.

If the Pastor won't correct the situation, then it may be time to move on to a different church. That's a hard decision to make.

Typically the "therapy" people receive is how to deal with the guilt their sin raises in them. No more guilt, no more problem.

I'm trying to decide whether to take the day off and catch the first show or just go after work.

Me too. We have a VERY small theater (three screens, and the rooms don't hold many people), one show nightly if it's a long one, and can't pre-purchase. So either I wait in line from really early or we don't go the first night. Last year we ended up waiting in line for about an hour and a half (from right after I got off work until seven o'clock), but there may be even MORE of a line this year. There were quite a few people in line before us by the time we got there THIS time.

He's not the Sunday school teacher, he's just another person in the class. Steve talked to our teacher and told him to let the guy know not to speak with me again.

This church is gigantic. It has many smaller groups within the large group and you find your group and where you fit in. I fit in with the homeschool support group and the president actually got quite a kick out of what I said (when I critised the mental health industry) because she knew the guy was getting an earful! She told me who he was after class and she was obviously tickled.

The people are supposed to run the church...everything is put to a vote. I think our Sunday school teacher might speak to the pastor and he might intervene...but I really hope he doesn't because I don't know the pastor personally and he doesn't know me at all. The Sunday school teacher is who I deal with mostly.

I wouldn't even go to this church if it wasn't for the kids (because I could still belong to the homeschool group, even belonging to another church). But the children's ministry is wonderful and their leadership is fantastic. The kids love church and look forward to going ever weekend.

I told Steve I wanted to just go to the library and work during the Sunday school hour and he said he'd miss me if I did. So I need to decide what to do.

Hullo! - Good Morning!

Just rumbling to a start here...

One show? What a pickle that is! I will have four or so shows per day to choose from at least, the first evening show being the most popular.

Dammit. There is another on of those shootings.

Good morning, Corin

Yeah, it was "Miz Hamner" that was my teacher. Actually, Schuyler, Va., where they live, is pretty mountainous, in a small sort of way. They are really hills, I guess, but almost too big and steep to be called hills.

But you're right that they are not really mountains. People in south Albemarle continue to refer to them as mountains though.

I'm thinking that the nearby Blue Ridge, which are legitimate mountains, are pretty much of a smaller range than the ones where you grew up. Are they the Alleghenies?

Good morning! Hope everyone had a good weekend...I was inspired by 2Jedismom and have officially started my home projects.

We also watched "The Secret of Roan Inish". I need the soundtrack. And I'd forgotten the main character's name was Fiona! (MY Fiona, however, was more interested in the seals than in her namesake...)

Good morning all!

Well, we got the vinyl laid down and it looks fabulous! The only thing we have left to do is replace the baseboards and paint them and put the cabinet doors back on. It looks so bright and cheery and CLEAN!

Last night I soaked in my tub with a cup of chamomile tea and my TT book in this bright new bathroom and just felt like I was in heaven! I was so keyed up over that guy at church that I needed to calm down, so I took a Benadryl and soaked for a long time.

I just heard on the radio that Jonah will be opening in theatres in the NE on October 18.

Jonah opened up at number 6 on the top box office list. They brought in about $6.4 million.

I hope they do really well. It was very strange sitting in a movie theatre watching a blatantly Christian movie. People were laughing, singing, and practically dancing along with the movie. It was a fun time for me and the boys.

2JM, speaking of Jonah, I guess that deacon in your church could be classified as a "Mr. Grumpypants." ;^)
