Who won the gerrymandering game? (from Grok)
Grok | 11/4/26 | Grok

Posted on 11/04/2026 6:41:49 AM PST by aquila48

From Grok... "Democrats effectively won the “gerrymandering game” in the 2026 midterms. Republican mid-decade redistricting efforts—pushed heavily by President Trump and aimed at protecting or expanding the GOP’s narrow House majority—largely failed or backfired amid a strong Democratic wave. Newsnationnow

Republicans redrew maps in multiple states (notably Texas targeting ~5 seats, Florida targeting 4, plus efforts in North Carolina, Alabama, Ohio, Tennessee, Louisiana, and others) based largely on 2024 Trump margins, hoping for a net gain that some estimated in the high single digits or more after accounting for Democratic responses. Courts and voters blocked or limited some efforts (e.g., Missouri). Democrats countered with a voter-approved map in California aimed at ~5 seats and benefited from a court-ordered map in Utah.

WSJ Key results (as of early reporting on November 4, 2026): Democrats won 11 of the 15 House seats Republicans targeted via newly redrawn maps. Republicans won only about two of those targeted seats (with a possible additional runoff factor in Louisiana). Newsnationnow

In Florida, Democrats took three (or all four) of the seats redrawn under Gov. Ron DeSantis to favor Republicans—districts Trump would have carried solidly in 2024. Examples include wins by Kathy Castor, Jared Moskowitz, and Pia Dandiya. Yahoo

In Texas, Republicans won just one of the five targeted seats and lost ground overall in the delegation (including some previously held seats). Texastribune

North Carolina’s GOP maps backfired, with multiple Democratic holds and flips in districts drawn to be more Republican-friendly, potentially flipping the state’s House delegation balance. Carolinapublicpress

Democrats secured the seats they targeted via their own maps (all six noted in one tally, including California gains and Utah). Newsnationnow

The maps were often described as potential “dummymanders” (overly aggressive lines that spread support too thin). A blue wave driven by dissatisfaction with the economy, Trump, and other issues overrode the engineered advantages in many places. Democrats flipped the House (and Senate) overall. Pre-election analyses had suggested the redraws still tilted the national map toward Republicans relative to neutral lines, but the actual results showed the strategy did not hold against the electoral environment. Axios

In short, the party that tried hardest to engineer a structural edge through mid-decade map changes did not get the returns it sought, while Democrats overperformed in both Republican-drawn and their own redrawn districts. Results were still firming up in some races, but the broad pattern was consistent across reporting.

“In Texas, Republicans won just one of the five targeted seats and lost ground overall in the delegation...”

Maybe Gov. Abbott will call the legislature into special session and do some mid-decade-post-election-pre-inauguration redistricting.

Anyone who thought the fight against evil is won or lost in a single election is naive in the extreme.

These are generational issues and fights. The fact is the country is still polarized even after this election. Iran issue might be over forever after this, but the domestic issues remain.

Here is the problem with getting greedy with gerrymandering. You need to follow through with winning all of the districts that you created for your party.

If you get too greedy trying to win extra seats, you risk watering down many of them. If many of them are watered down and not as strongly in your court, then you need to make sure you put yourself in each of them. You actually create more work on the ground for yourself.

dummymanders
_______

In 1982 Indiana Republicans have drawn the lines too aggressively, in similar fashion.
Since Democrats protested, it even went to Supreme court Davis v. Bandemer, 478 U.S. 109 (1986), which left the lines as drawn.
Due to small vote shift, this backfired so badly, that for a while, Indiana was represented by 1 ONE! Republican congressman and about 10 Democrats. It took many years for IN Republicans to recover from this self made disaster!

Trump pressed IN Republicans to redo this, but few brave state senators voted against and save IN Republicans. Unfortunately they all paid the price and were defeated in primaries.

This redistricting was a blatant try to mess up the election.
It left bad taste even in my mouth, and like the 1982 redistricting, it backfired badly!

Clearly, they were not wrong.

I think Florida was the only bright spot. Coincidentally that’s where I live.

It was a loss for this midterm, as was everything else Republican - this doesn’t mean it won’t produce wins in the future. I was a huge Blue Wave, nothing was stopping that.

Data point #1: One of my receptionists (a Democrat) that is older (75+) and could not vote yesterday in Texas, because someone else requested a mail in ballot.

She and disagree about a lot, but as a teacher for 40+ years I suspect that she remembers the old Texas Democrat party and votes that way.

So maybe mail in ballots were a place that the DSA could target as a weakness.

If you are going to battle with the GOP/RNC, you are doing so with both hands tied behind your back. The GOP has been an ineffective party for decades, which can't be accidental. Their outreach to pretty much any group/demographic is pathetic, and there seems to be no discernable message coming from anyone other than Trump (and that didn't go well this time around). The Bush wing of the party will now try to take back control of the party, which will be a complete disaster if they succeed in those efforts - nobody likes those people. Politics is always a "fight", but the landscape changed drastically yesterday as we move forward with an even weaker GOP.

Oh, I forgot. That and the obscure place in the state whom I won’t name that just elected a turd burglar for senator.

If I understand what you wrote, did she report that someone else fraudulently got her mail-in ballot? If true, that’s cheating.

No, she didn’t even get a chance to cast a provisional ballot.

I need to see the procedure to see what she voted for, where from and when. Then I would start looking at a chance to prove cheating.

I may see if my GrokBot can compare the statistics, and at what granularity for this election verses past elections.

Also wondering if Chine or Iran could have altered vote totals, since they have incentive to do so.
