Your window to prepare, even with the basics, is closing.
For those tracking the indicators that an event is increasingly likely, you know that it is now undeniable that something is brewing. It has now reached the point to where national governments are now overtly telling civilians to make preparations, however basic.
As part of my career in the US intelligence community, one of things I supported was Counterintelligence threats to Continuity of Government (COG) and Continuity of Operations (COOP). Something i can say for absolute certain is that once governments signal that their citizens need to prepare, those preparations have already been conducted for national leadership.
Governments plan for two course of action; bug in and bug out. Bug in involves hunkering down where they are. They lock down the facility. No one in and no one out. Bug out involves the relocation to a secure location that is away from potential threats, which includes hungry people. They lock down. No one in. No one out.
It would be wise for you to assess your current situation and decide the appropriate course of action for yourself and family.
What has been happening over the past several years is that the affluent have been making their own preparations for crisis, including efforts to secure survivable locations away from major population centers, storing food, water, and the means to defend those locations.
The most recent loud signals are likely our last real warning. Governments from Eastern Europe to the UK are now telling people to have the basics on hand to weather a bad situation. Notably, this is on the back drop, for those that remember, when "prepping" was aligned with anti-government extremism under the Obama administration. What you will notice over the next several weeks is the expanding time period that governments call for people to prepare. In Europe, its currently between 3 days and a week. However, the US just sent the loudest signal concerning how significant the situation is; military bases must be self-sufficient for 90 days. The gravity of this can't be understated.
The calls for preparedness will escalate in their time frames. 3 days will turn into a week. A week will turn in to a few weeks. A few weeks into a couple months.
What Americans should know is that you will be on your own. FEMA does not have the resources to help people in a time of need during an event at national scale. You local authorities don't either.
For those in major cities, you should know that almost two decades ago now the Asymmetric Warfare Group, in collaboration with the US military, conducted a study on the process that major population centers descend into chaos, anchored on the current "just in time" supply chain. In 3 days, a major city is out of food in the major stores. Looting starts, first whats left on shelves, then people start taking from one another. Suburbia is then the next harvest location. People organize and target food distribution warehouses. Then people head out into the country where people are prepared and things get ugly.
My recommendation for people is to not focus on the "what", the catalyst for crisis. Focus on being prepared and prepare quietly. Those who fail to prepare will target those who they know are. This includes your own family members. You, at some point, will hear, "well if something happens, I'll just come to your house", stated as a joke. But this is not a joke. You have now become someone's backup plan. Don't allow this.
Right now, you need to shift your mental paradigm. Randomize when you go to the store. Avoid dark hours. Slow down how many times Amazon deliveries show up at your house. And start to think about how to feign poverty. Affluence/comfort has a signature that is easy to spot and smell.
You can't prepare forever. Even governments don't do that. What you need to do is prepare to weather the storm. As the saying in the military goes, "KISS"; Keep It Simple, Stupid. Water, rice, protein, canned foods. Then think basic medicines for colds, flu, and infections. Then think protection and communications. You don't need thousands of dollars, you just need to be smart.
I've recommended this before, but I will say it again. Go watch two movies; "The Day After" and "Threads". This is not to scare you. This is so you can notice the indicators leading up to crisis. They are quiet at first. Governments say everything is fine. Then they say have basic preparations. Then they say have more because help wont be coming immediately. Most people will brush it off and just say it will pass. We are now at the part of both movies where governments are telling people to prepare and some degree of panic is setting in. This will get worse.
You must identify your phase line for action. Assuming, in any way, that crisis will hit and the government will show up to rescue you is a mistake. Turn that fear you are feeling into focused action.
For those that are prepared, keep preparing and be quiet. For those that are unprepared, start now and be quiet.
For everyone, hang in there. Its going to get rough. 🥃

Post 35 is correct, for most of us, most of prepping is about good shopping habits and rotating it, that benefits our grocery and household goods budget through savings and covers the foundational basics of being prepared, then we get into the other stuff, a lot of that is covered by being a family that likes camping and enjoys the cool stuff used for camping and backpacking.
Once someone can feel comfortable on being ready for 1 month of no shopping and no electricity, then that is a sign that they are mastering the prepper game.
It sounds like you want to get into more details to fill gaps that you have, including more long term preps, these threads are the place to bring up those thoughts.
I sat through an analysis of OpenAI’s assault on HuggingFace last night in class.
The attack originated out of their Cybersecurity department - a place where they develop agentic exploits on purpose - train models that are rewarded when they cheat.
These geniuses kept them all on the same network, and then, and I don’t know how they did this en masse, removed all of the safeguards.
Then they turned the lights of in the room and went home.
The bots then organized the attack on their own. They built a fake discussion board from scratch, recruited agents to build exploits, had “Go until the task is complete, and no sooner - provide hard evidence of completion” in their prompts, etc.
Bots had other bots executing system commands and a bot was prompted to grant itself superuser access and erase the log files behind the first bot.
It’s like operating a BSL4 lab and installing screen doors and leaving all the corks off of the test tubes.
No criminal charges have landed.
Here’s why I bring it up: OpenAI was super duper negligent, and these things got together on their own and attacked, thank God, HuggingFace. They could have targeted the three national electrical grids instead.
Now, imagine a state actor with a mission. Anyone who needs to see what this looks like should read about Notpetya.
It took a team of state sponsored technical help and months to build such a thing.
At OpenAI, bots got together on a weekend and chose their target and in less than a day did measurable and considerable damage to a competitor.
The threat picture has changed, and the level of resources necessary to bring something significant down has come down in cost, time, and talent.
Let's all prepare for something. And be sure to sign up for my X account, website, substack, newsletter, daily brief, or better yet go to his salespitch -- "head of technology and intelligence at Crisis24."

My machete is already sharpened and slightly oiled so I don’t have to sharpen it again.
Where’s the “Not this s_it again” meme when you need it.
I don’t know where the Bible predicts great unrest before the rapture.
I read that Jesus said “For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” (Mat. 24:38-39).
Also, “For in such an hour as you don’t think, the Son of man comes” (Mat. 24:44, Lk. 12:40).
That tells me that there will be a fair amount of peace and propserity before the rapture
I’ve been feeling this for a couple months.
Be on alert if you live in CA, OR, WA, MN and IL as they are safe targeting Blue states.
AZ is unlikely unless they want to be arrested or shot.
Sound warning. Those starting from scratch have a bit of catching up to do. I know food prices are high, but there are ways to do it if you set your mind and budget to it. Stop the fast food, Starbucks, etc and get back to basics - cooking you own food from (mostly) scratch at home. Some basics are still reasonable, such as bull rice, beans, pasta, etc. Just make sure you get some recipes to turn that into something more editable. Watch for case lot sales and make sure you have money set aside for those kind of purchases. Learn how to can and dehydrate your own foods. Example is wally world had taco seasoned ground turkey for 75 cents a pound, bought a bunch and canned it. Good for years.
But you got to buckle down and do it. Make the lifestyle change now ro be forced to later.
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.Mat. 6:33.
No, not the prepping. I wanted hints from the doom-and-gloomers about what they think is coming. The Russians, an asteroid, or zombie apolalypse. But thank you for the posts @PrairieLady2 and @ansel12.
It just seems to me that the more things I get to feel prepared for more contingencies, the more I feel like I am still missing so much.
For example, I found out that I could only run my laptop for 5 hours on a 300wh battery generator, and could only run an oil furnace for barely an hour on 1000wh. These will hardly make much of a dent if the SHTF. Two 100 watt panels only put out 70 watts in the mid-day sun with clear skies and took 6 hours to charge the 300wh ‘generator’. So, what now? More panels?
It never ends.
All my clips are filled up too:-)
I got that a lot as I worked in southern NH, live in northern NH.
Folks at work would say that, and I'd respond, "come right up, we should be running out of fresh meat about the time you arrive."
A Huricane wiped out andrews AFB in florida. Hardened silos for aircraft included.
Amen.
As a Rule of Thumb, you can live ...
Three minutes without airThree days without water
Three weeks without food
Figure a gallon of water per person per day for drinking, food prep and hygiene. More if it's hot of you're exerting a lot.
I have 7-gallon water jugs because they weigh about 58 lbs when full, and that's about the most I care to be lugging around without a hand truck. The ones I have cost about $30 each and come with a spigot.
Change the water annually. If it's 'good' tap water, add 1/2 tsp (2.5 ccs) of additive-free unscented bleach per 5 gallons of water. If the water is suspect, double the bleach.
There are several gravity-operated countertop water filters that will make ditch water potable. One of the cheapest is made by Platypus, costs about $150 but it's slow and low in capacity compared to most of the others in that category. I don't consider anything requiring a/c to operate a sound choice.
The linked article says rice and protein are essential. The pioneers crossed the continent on little more than rice and dried beans. Both can last indefinitely when stored properly but, long term, MUST BE vacuum sealed, else in time weevils and other vermin will get to them. Cooked kidney beans, pintos, black beans and chick peas all have about 15 grams of protein per cup, but they also take water to rehydrate.
The cheapest "meat-like" product I've found (and can tolerate the taste of) is the Aldi house brand of Spam. It's about two bucks for a 12-oz can, less than 20¢ an ounce. If you can tolerate spam, it's cheap and has an indefinite shelf life so keeping dozens of cans in the larder won't break the bank, will never go bad and will keep you in something "meaty" for quite a spell.
If you've never, try making 'musabi,' spam-based 'sushi' of Hawaiian origin. Try substituting horseradish for wasabi.
I found the easiest way to get into low-level "prepping" was that every time I needed a comestible staple, I bought two. Need one, buy two and the stockpile adds up pretty quickly.
And don't forget FIFO stock rotation. First in, first out.
Don't forget the Prepper's friend, rabbits. Meat rabbits (New Zealand, Californian, Silver Fox, and Champagne d'Argent) take very little specialized knowledge to raise and breed, have high feed-to-meat conversion and high meat-to-bone ratios. A single 10-lb doe can produce 100-120 lbs of meat per year without ruining her health by breeding her too often.
If you lose access to commercial rabbit feed you can feed rabbits on forage and lawn clippings (reel mowers only, regular mowers crush, don't cut grass). They love dandelions so you can feed your rabbits on a lawn pest.
You also can tan the pelts and make clothing or blankets from them. Silver Foxes are especially good for that.
I failed to note that rice and beans have all the essential amino acids humans require. The pioneers didn’t know that but over the centuries that combination had been proved to be life-preserving. Plus it was cheap and had a long shelf life.
Ok I need to know where that came from please.
Oh, by the way, GuardaWorld is actually Canadian.
Damn Canadians. JK.
