https://www.clarin.com/us-news/what-is-glycidyl-methacrylate-health-risks-exposure-symptoms-and-cancer-warnings-after-toledo-chemical-leak_0_6ewBS63RHh.html

from link:

Following an overnight hazardous materials incident that triggered widespread protective orders in North Toledo, municipal and county officials formally identified the released substance as glycidyl methacrylate (GMA).

The release originated from an exterior tank at the MC Tank terminal located at 1266 Progress Ave. late Tuesday evening. During a Wednesday morning briefing, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz confirmed that one first responder was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation—marking the only known injury to date—while emergency response personnel and environmental teams continue working to contain the ongoing leak.

With a mandatory one-mile evacuation order and a three-mile shelter-in-place perimeter remaining active across northern Lucas County, public health leaders have issued specific clinical guidance detailing what the compound is, how it affects the human body, and what decontamination steps exposed residents must take.

Chemical Profile: What Is Glycidyl Methacrylate?
Glycidyl methacrylate, commonly abbreviated as GMA, is an organic chemical compound bearing the molecular formula “C7H10O3”

According to product documentation from Dow Chemical Company and data published in the National Institutes of Health’s PubChem repository, GMA is a colorless liquid characterized by a sweet, slightly fruity odor. The substance serves as a dual-function monomer and chemical intermediate in high-performance manufacturing:

Industrial Applications: It is utilized to enhance the durability, adhesion, and chemical resistance of commercial paints, automotive coatings, synthetic rubbers, and polymer resins.
Molecular Behavior: Because of its unique molecular architecture—combining both methacrylate and epoxy groups—GMA readily bonds with other molecules to form larger plastic networks.
Handling Hazards: Industrial safety sheets emphasize that GMA requires strict temperature regulation and chemical stabilization inhibitors during transit and bulk storage; without proper stabilizers, the monomer can undergo uncontrolled, heat-generating self-polymerization that builds pressure inside containment vessels.
Toxicity Levels and Medical Risks
During a Wednesday press conference, Lucas County Health Commissioner Karim Baroudi outlined the immediate physical threats and long-term concerns associated with GMA exposure, noting that while the diluted airborne cloud acts primarily as an irritant at current ambient levels, the liquid compound itself possesses high inherent toxicity.
