French carmaker Citroen has brought back its 2CV brand in a bid to boost sales of electric cars in a difficult market.

The new model, unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, is a small city runabout with retro styling which harks back to one of the company's most famous designs.

As a "concept car" intended to show Citroen's direction of travel, it is not yet ready to go on sale but the plan is to have a version in showrooms by 2028.

As they face mounting competition from Chinese manufacturers, Citroen and other European brands are exploiting their heritage as a means of selling modern motors.

I had a couple of them when I lived in GB. Spacious, incredibly reliable and 50MPG, top speed was 75mph on a good day

Before becoming the 2CV, the car was developed internally as the TPV (Toute Petite Voiture = “Very Small Car”). The project began in the mid-1930s under Pierre Boulanger as a minimalist, low-cost vehicle aimed at rural French buyers (the famous brief involved carrying two farmers, 50 kg of potatoes, and a basket of eggs across a plowed field without breaking them). It was renamed 2CV by the time of the planned (but war-delayed) 1939 Paris Motor Show launch and was publicly introduced under that name in 1948.

Will they still use the same criteria of success?

Citroën DS: Produced from 1955 to 1975, this model featured a self-leveling hydropneumatic suspension system. By adjusting hydraulic pressure, the car could lift its body high enough to keep a removed wheel hub clear of the ground, allowing it to drive short distances or change a tire without a traditional jack.

Other Hydropneumatic Models: Later Citroën vehicles that shared similar hydro-pneumatic or hydraulic suspension technology—such as the Citroën SM and Citroën CX—theoretically possessed similar suspension adjustment capabilities, though the DS is the most famous historical example known for this trick.

Based on what’s going on in France now with the Muslims and their ongoing violent takeover, one is given to wonder whether many of these French industries will still be viable in several more years.

Charles de Gaulle must be turning over in his grave seeing what is being done to France. I can’t imagine he would have put up with what is going on now.

Whatever you can say about Charles de Gaulle, he was not a girly man like Macron. And despite being in the EEC de Gaulle was a nationalist.

The bigger Citron my dad owned had air shocks. It would go up and down. Italians loved them.
