Massachusetts restaurant owner assaults teen dine-and-dashers, pulls gun during scuffle, police say

A Massachusetts restaurant owner allegedly beat two teenage dine-and-dashers and pointed a gun at a larger group that gathered after he chased the pair down when they skipped out on their bill last week, authorities said.

Nadim Kashouh, 62, chased the teens – a 17-year-old girl and Javonnie Lee, 18 – after the pair darted out of Nadim’s Downtown Mediterranean Grill on Friday evening without paying their $92.40 bill, the Boston Globe reported.

Kashouh reportedly chased the teens and caught them at a convenience store.

The teens reportedly told the police that they tried to pay their tab twice but bolted after their card was declined both times, according to the newspaper.

Kashouh, an immigrant from Lebanon who came to the United States in 1990, allegedly grabbed the girl's phone and demanded they pay. He then elbowed the girl and punched Lee in the face, the Springfield Police Department said.

"As a larger group gathered, Kashouh is alleged to have pointed his firearm in the direction of the group. Kashouh stated he did so in self-defense," police spokesperson Ryan Walsh said, according to WMTV.

Walsh said Kashouh's firearm and his license to carry permit were seized. He is charged with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, armed robbery with a firearm, and assault and battery.

Meanwhile, the two teens will be issued criminal complaints for defrauding a restaurant.

They didn’t do nuffin.

Sadly, the restaurant owner will probably be sued by this pair for losing his cool.

Texans and people in other red states should take note: vote the Democrats in this year and in 2028 will mean your state will become Colorado in 10 years, California in 20 years, and Massachusetts in 30 years. (I am probably optimistic).

I know Nadim. He is a good man. But he must have been driven a little crazy by crap like this over and over.

Chasing down dine and dashers with a gun is a bit extreme. I understand the frustration. But the reaction was not appropriate as no one’s life was threatened. In fact, bystanders might have been endangered by his actions.

I doubt he gets convicted/indicted. But it will cost him.

No one’s life may have been threatened directly. But how about indirectly?

Maybe Nadim can’t buy food to eat someday, because he doesn’t have 92.40.

Maybe Nadim can’t buy health insurance or pay his doctor someday, because he doesn’t have 92.40. Maybe his blood pressure goes up because of this incident.

Maybe Nadim buys a smaller car or decides to wait on a brake job, because he doesn’t have 92.40.

Maybe Massachusetts’ reaction is what was not appropriate.

I had been wondering that for a while now.

Why don't restaurants take credit cards in advance, the way some businesses do? Such as when you book a hotel reservation. Or rent a car.

Springfield, Massachusetts...

Dr Seuss, Basketball Hall of Fame, Springfield Armory and Indian Motorcycles. Guess which one is only there now?

I hate to be a racist, but I doubt they are white. I also hate to be superior, but I doubt they will get scholarships to MIT...

“ The “teens” need to be beaten for acting the way they did.”

No they don’t, they need elimination! Once we eliminate enough of the trouble life will indeed be better for all.

Yeah, let’s move further away from a trust based society because some folks can’t be trusted to act decent in society. Or, we could keep our trust based society and send the ferals to break rocks for the next five years.

Of course at least in theory there is a third alternative—totally illegal these days—and has been illegal for decades.

The restaurant gets to “discriminate” between customers and decide who it wants to serve or who it wants to pay in advance based on whatever criteria it chooses.

“The law” undermines a high trust society when it does not allow discrimination.

This is an idea that one shouldn’t dismiss out of hand.
It would bug me that I’d have to do this but completely understand why it’s necessary.
This feeling will be the same irritation waiting for an associate to come unlock a sales cabinet while shopping.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

as I read the story, it seems like nadim didn’t pull his gun in self defense until after he was surrounded by an aggressive group/gang

Yeah - there’s some trigger-happy people here. It’s not the appropriate response to every situation. It’s exactly what the police are for - we’re not in the wild west.

I really don’t like the idea of paying in advance, but will admit that with situations like this becoming common (if they are) that might be the way to go. However, they may have to figure on losing some customers.

“Why don’t restaurants take credit cards in advance, the way some businesses do?”

In theory, customers could order food via a cellphone or walk over to a computer screen like McDonald’s has and the order would always be right and paid for.

There would be another merchant fee if the customers wanted coffee or dessert afterward or choose to have a glass of wine based on a waiter’s suggestion.

Outside of the USA, merchant fees are far, far less.

India has a payment system without merchant fees. There is talk of levying merchant fees on larger businesses.

If orders were taken by phone, the restaurant would be able to get the phone’s ID.

GPS tracking information might also be downloaded.

A restaurant association could match the phone to a credit card after the first credit card sale.

If there was a decline or non-payment associated with the phone, the customers would have order at a large screen and prepay.

Enough said, kudos to the restaurant owner, the state should drop the charges.
