I had been wondering that for a while now.

Why don't restaurants take credit cards in advance, the way some businesses do? Such as when you book a hotel reservation. Or rent a car.

Yeah, let’s move further away from a trust based society because some folks can’t be trusted to act decent in society. Or, we could keep our trust based society and send the ferals to break rocks for the next five years.

This is an idea that one shouldn’t dismiss out of hand.
It would bug me that I’d have to do this but completely understand why it’s necessary.
This feeling will be the same irritation waiting for an associate to come unlock a sales cabinet while shopping.

“Why don’t restaurants take credit cards in advance, the way some businesses do?”

In theory, customers could order food via a cellphone or walk over to a computer screen like McDonald’s has and the order would always be right and paid for.

There would be another merchant fee if the customers wanted coffee or dessert afterward or choose to have a glass of wine based on a waiter’s suggestion.

Outside of the USA, merchant fees are far, far less.

India has a payment system without merchant fees. There is talk of levying merchant fees on larger businesses.
