There need to be some enforced rules.
When a 225 pound man on a 50 pound e-bike is going 45 MPH down a mixed pedestrian and bike path, one small mistake will put everyone in the hospital or morgue. I’ve had several near misses (<6”) with these black clad mad max road warriors THIS MONTH.
At some level, the bike needs to be licensed with the State, the operator has to have a driver’s license, any applicable helmet laws enforced, and ride only on city surface streets. What we have now is flat dangerous.

Agree. I’ve seen very young kids driving these things on the street. High speed, and no idea about rules of the road or how to stay safe.
This isn’t riding a dirt bike in the country. I’m taking about city/suburban settings with lots of people and traffic.

Kids are already getting killed on E bikes.
My city council just passed an ordinance limiting speed and other aspects of them.
I doubt the police have time to enforce it but we’ll see.
During the 60s in So Cal our bikes (pedals) had to have a permit sticker. Cost about $2 or so.
