Former President George W. Bush warned that Americans risk forgetting a critical lesson of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks if the United States turns inward and ignores threats developing overseas.
"Our nation occasionally goes through isolationist periods, where the attitude is, 'Well, we've got too many problems at home. Therefore, who cares about what happens overseas?'" Bush said Wednesday, according to CBS News. "Which really means to me they just don't pay attention to the lessons of 9/11, because what happens overseas matters to our national security at home."
Bush delivered the warning at his presidential library in Dallas alongside former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who served as his national security adviser when terrorists attacked the United States nearly 25 years ago.
The former president said the U.S. does not necessarily need to deploy soldiers abroad but should support people fighting tyranny.
"We don't have to send troops," Bush said. "We ought to at least stand with them and stand beside them because this is what we went through 250 years ago. And again, it's a belief that everybody wants to be free, and we saw that in Afghanistan."
Bush ordered U.S. forces into Afghanistan after 9/11, beginning what became America's longest war. U.S. forces withdrew in 2021 after nearly 20 years, and the Taliban returned to power.
The 43rd president pushed back against arguments that Afghans did not understand the difference between life under a democratic government and Taliban rule.

The “central lesson” of 9/11 is that we should have got the job done in 1991, in the First Persian Gulf War. Instead, your father, G.H.W. Bush, called an end to that war after 100 hours.
At least we should have declared a southern no-fly zone, enabling the Marsh Arabs to achieve a kind of autonomy like the Kurds achieved in the north.
Continuing, your idea - reviewed, approved and implemented by Obama - that we could reconstruct Afghanistan as a democracy capable of defending itself turned out to be incorrect. Afghanistan had never been a functioning state of any kind. There was nothing to “re”-construct.
This is not to say that you and your national security team were stupid. Maybe naive. Maybe over-optimistic. Definitely, not realistic. Our country has had a series of idealistic Presidents ... Woodrow Wilson topping the list. They get us - the U.S. - in trouble. We have a big enough job already, as leader of the free world. We should avoid do-gooding.
Idealism is why your brother Jeb did so poorly in the Republican primaries of 2016. The central lesson of 9/11 wasn’t that we, the U.S., should have a foreign policy dependent on international cooperation, because the central lesson of history is that we should have a foreign policy of peace through strength. Meaning, mostly we avoid war (Washington said avoid “foreign entanglements”), but if we can’t avoid war, that we be so strong that we achieve a quick and decisive victory.

Bush is talking out his ass, we were a globalist/military interventionist nation on 9/11 & have remained one ever since.
We haven’t practiced our historical isolationist position since the 1930’s.
Americans were hit over the head with the propaganda saying that if only we joined The League of Nations, there would have been no Hitler.
The country is hollowed out broke. We are $40t in debt, of which W. created a huge chunk, before his buddy Obama spent so much he raised the national debt 110% himself, and W. wants to continue to police the world like money doesn’t matter. W. lives in a bubble and has a light grasp on reality.

Trump's public position in 2016 that the 2003 invasion of Iraq was a stupid thing to do pretty much made GWB persona non grata here on FR.
Trump had stated the sentiments that people here on FR were once vilified for.
Although Trump started his own stupid war; maybe the feelings will shift back towards GWB.
I think it started way before that.
Our fbi had a fbi source who helped house several of the hijackers. Several of the hijackers over stayed their student visas, and were also issued a state drivers license. Don't issue one way tickets.
Don't invade countries that weren't the primary source of the problem, and go after countries that spread Wahhabi hate around the world.
