Stocks dropped Thursday after U.S. oil prices topped $100 a barrel, amid growing fears of higher inflation from a prolonged war in the Middle East.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 315 points, or 0.6%. The S&P 500 fell 0.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite slid 0.5% too.
Higher oil prices continued to weigh on sentiment, as the war between the U.S. and Iran stretched into a seventh month. U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures for October jumped above $100 per barrel. Futures for the international benchmark Brent crude for November delivery spiked above $105 a barrel.
The jump in oil prices pushed the 10-year Treasury yield above 4.9%, the highest level since November 2023.
High beta chip stocks that have led the bull market traded lower on fears higher rates and oil could slow the economy. Intel and Micron Technology both fell 4%.
A tame wholesale inflation report failed to allay fears coalescing around higher rates and oil prices. August’s producer price index, a measure of wholesale inflation, rose a seasonally adjusted 0.4% for the month, in line with the Dow Jones consensus. On an annual basis, that put PPI at 5.4%, which is still well above the Fed’s 2% inflation target.
The report comes ahead of the closely watched consumer price index on Friday. Both numbers feed into the Fed’s primary inflation gauge, the personal consumption expenditures price index, which won’t be released until after the Fed’s interest rate vote Sept. 16.
“The PPI release itself was inconclusive, in that doesn’t really help to settle the question of ‘hike or no hike’ from the Fed next week, but WTI oil prices surging back above $100 and Treasury yields hitting new highs is certainly raising the stakes for investors ahead of tomorrow’s crucial CPI report,” wrote Stephen Coltman, head of macro at 21shares.
Fed funds futures were last pricing in a 74% likelihood of a quarter point hike following the conclusion of next week’s meeting, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.
The major averages are coming off a three-day slide, after the Treasury Department said it would buy back up to $6 billion in longer-term debt – triple the usual amount. Less than a month ago, the Treasury said it would more than double the size of its $2 billion government debt repurchases.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m alwaysconcerned about high gas prices, but also about how Iran is being run. Those who are in power over there apparently are just not interested in common sense; their ideals are set in stone. Both their people & our’s here are getting the short end of all this, with the Iranian people getting the worst of it as they have been for years. But it seems as tho some other country (like the US) will be the ones to have to make the changing move.
There’s nothing shortsighted about that perspective. The price of gasoline is something that is tangible. Nonsense about “defanging Iran” means nothing to people who have no reason to trust anything their government tells them — especially about sh!t that is happening halfway around the world.
“Who”.
There’s your problem.
I don’t give a damn about Who — only the What.
The most basic, bedrock core of my conservatism is that we have a Republic. A republic needs a head of state - but our founders gifted us an ingenious system of 3 coequal Federal branches, an interlacing system of federal/state/local governance — and all of it created with the basic idea that individual liberties and choice are the biggest reason ANY o it exists.
18 years ago - I enjoyed mocking the Obots who wanted The One to be a Dear Leader that would Fix It.
Makes me want to vomit.
Now? It’s nothing but pick your color: Blue or Red for the Dear Leader to wipe your butt, save you from your own bad choices, and lean on a singular person to take care of you.
I’d rather see the government work on breaking the heat wave in Texas. I can’t take it any more!
From what I’ve heard we need more refineries anyway. Would it be possible & worthwhile to build more refineries & set them up purposely for different grades of crude?
Right.
The smart people know it’s actually the lizard men from Mars, working with the Freemasons, financed by the Rothschilds who control the globalists.
The summer driving season is over.
Labor Day is past.
Prices should weaken.
It’s a satanic force that has been attacking America for a long time.
Home Depot 1.3% year over year sales increase
Lowes .3% year over year sales increase
Inflation is 2.5%
So, that means the two largest home improvement companies in the USA have negative growth this year so far.
The stock market is up about 10-11% on the S&P 500 for the year. That is probably all we will get. Which is why the stock market is not going up. With the exception of certain high tech companies. Almost all of that gain was from March 30th to June 1st.
This is why I moved 100% of my 401K into the Money Market the first week of June.
The only stocks I personally own are NVIDIA and SpaceX. Although I wish I had not sold Palantir to buy SpaceX.
I am not a financial guru. Just my opinion.
Place your own bets!
I hope that JD is warming up in the bullpen getting ready to come in and take over. Trump has clearly lost it; he should resign after January 20 and let JD have a shot at ten years in office.
All prices , Caused by The Federal Government Debt Enslavement Cult.

And when you see the Fake Debt Cult, Hooverville so called “market” drop, Deflation.

If the CPI comes in hotter than expected, even by a little bit, tomorrow could be a significant down day in the market. Asset valuation models are very sensitive to the specter of rising rates.
So who would you like instead of Trump right now?
I suspect the price increases have to do with Canada.
If the Canadian government wants higher prices for its oil, it can force them higher.
Congress can limit oil exports. That would mean up to a three million barrel per day US surplus and would crash the Canadian oil industry.
But what about the refineries? I’m pretty sure adjustments can be made - perhaps just turning a few valves.
Sure thing. Just ask the EPA for a permit.
Not trying to be a Debbie Downer.
Personally, I would NUKE Iran’s sites and be done with it.
HOWEVER, it is the price of DIESEL FUEL that is really effecting the economy. People can cut back on driving, except for work.
Diesel effects the cost of transportation of everything. Ships, trucks, choo choo. Plus the cost of operating ANY farm & construction machinery.
Therefore, making all those products shipped or grown incrementally more expensive(INFLATION).
I do know this…your words are always, always against the interests of USA and our President and Military.
I don’t exactly know what your early life was like, yet sadly it was not a good one.
The words you post are like that of what a Marxist rat would post.
Trump right now is the equivalent of Tom Brady throwing three interceptions in the first half of a game.
No one can take away his GOAT status, nobody would be a better long term alternative as a starting QB, but he has made some poor decisions and put his team in a bad position.
Criticism of those errors is warranted, with corrections needed and quickly.
