Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, were “surprised” by a letter sent on behalf of King Charles III that confirmed they remain nonworking members of the royal family after their return to Britain, a spokesperson for the couple told NBC News on Tuesday.
Buckingham Palace released the letter Monday, reiterating that Harry and Meghan remained nonworking royals as they have since they stepped down from royal duties in January 2020.
A palace source said the letter was issued to clarify the unchanged position of the couple for the British government and military amid questions over whether the public should fund their security.
It was put into the public domain because it likely would have leaked anyway and the palace wanted to avoid claims of secrecy around what it contained, the source said.
But a spokesman for Harry and Meghan told NBC News that they were “surprised” by the letter and were not given an opportunity to contribute to its contents.
The contents of the letter were shared with the couple’s staff a few hours before it was released, according to a spokesperson for the Sussexes. A Buckingham Palace source confirmed to NBC News that the letter had been shared with Harry’s team Monday.

Wanna bet Canada had more to do with Uganda’s decision to bail than any respect for KCIII.
Note to the Harkles: You two boneheads never should have been dumb enough to mention Canada as a backup plan.
“Harry and Meghan ‘surprised’ by king’s letter making clear they’re still nonworking royals”
surprised? ... really? ...
i would’ve bet 50 bucks that just had to be a babylon bee headline ...
“and all the time in the world to do whatever it is they want to do.”
EXCEPT be “Royal” again ...
in fact, i think there’s even a TV ad to that effect: “Becoming Royal again: priceless.”
“I think the Brit Royals meant “non-wanted” not nonworking.”
probably one of those dratted automatic spell-check changes ...
Non-working Royals?? Did they ever WORKED?? 😀
Update: Harry and Megan make plans to move to Norway after hearing there’s a opening.
C’mon someone has to cut the ribbon opening up flower shows, festivals, bridges and new shopping centers! Without them who would the UK tabloids write about?
What these “royals” call work most of us would call leisure.
She was one of a kind, that woman!
She was a pretty nice girl.
Harkles, this one’s for you...

They make very interesting reading.
Valley Girl talk,
Years ago, I read a biography of James Joyce, the famous Irish writer at the beginning of the prior century. He took up with a loose woman, writing about their escapades thinly disguised in a novel. Defiantly unmarried, they went to Italy in exile because it was a scandal in a still a very Catholic country. Eventually they wanted to return to Ireland, and got married in a civil union. The biographer said they had to work diligently to regain any social acceptance in their homeland, in spite of his celebrity status.
Didn’t know why that passage from maybe 40 years ago stuck with me, but now I do. Sadly, the Markles appear devoid of a moral sense. Has she even called her own father yet? He is likely to die without ever seeing her husband or children—or her whom he raised, ever again.
Her father had a heart attack just before the wedding and couldn't travel.
It doesn't work that way. She would never be the sovereign Queen under any scenario, just as Camilla will not be sovereign Queen when Charles dies—William will immediately be the sovereign King.
Harry is fifth in line to the throne. She would have to knock off not just Charles, but also William, George, Charlotte and Louis. That would give Parliament time to remove Harry from the British Line of Succession.
