Why in heaven's name are we emulating the French?

Can't we come up with something a little more original? As opposed to an imperial edifice, how about a structural equivalent of the Fanfare for the Common Man?

Trump arch will alter sightlines of many Washington DC landmarks, report says

National Park Service, which backs the 250ft arch, says it is likely to disrupt historical significance of dozens of sites

Associated Press

A new National Park Service report backs Donald Trump’s proposed arch, despite what it says are adverse effects to the sightlines of a host of landmarks in Washington, including the Washington Monument and the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials.

The report released on Friday says the 250ft-tall (76-meter) memorial arch is likely to disrupt the historical significance of dozens of sites near its planned location adjacent to the Arlington Memorial Bridge.

Many of Washington’s monuments, buildings and sites have been carefully planned over decades to reflect significant moments in the nation’s history and to evoke symbolism through sightlines that connect them to other sites. The arch will disturb the sightline between more Washington landmarks than anticipated, the report said.

The entire history of Napoleonic France was every bit as vile as the decadent monarchy the Jacobins deposed: violent, collectivist, godless, licentious... It led to the destruction of a generation of French patriots and left the nation in ruin, demographically ripe for later German conquest as revenge. What the hell is Trump doing emulating that?

Celebrate our people Mr. President: shopkeepers, craft workers, scientists, and the manual labor that made you rich. Why not?

Lawsuits will tie this up for years, and the next president will kill the project. I doubt it’s going to happen.

Trump and others are paying for this, chipping in over $100 million.

The tax payer is merely stuck with $15 million, far less than what we’ve paid for other Presidential projects, I don’t see an issue with it.

This has cost the US taxpayer 123 million: https://www.obama.org/visit/ No complaints by our MSM, not really. But I’m sure we’re about to hear them about Trump and his arch.

In fact, $123 million US tax dollars spent gets you this: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/02/arts/design/obama-presidential-center-library-chicago.html “A Lovely Park and a Forbidding Tower” I’m not sure what that deformed cube is supposed to mean or symbolize? Does anyone know?

That said, I also think the style in Trumps arch will bother people.

Many folks today do not like things which look bold and strong, national, classic and Empire like.

It has to be “bla,” in grey, made out of recycled plastic bottles, and make some social or environmental statement.

What does an arch say? https://www.classicist.org/articles/classical-comments-the-triumphal-arch-as-a-design-resource/

Just what DC needs another obstacle along the Potomac for pilots to dodge as they approach Reagan Airport from the south. /s

Trump should have Masons as consultants on this project, otherwise the feng shui of DC might be totally thrown out of balance.
