The MONTHLY Victory Garden Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Victory Garden Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
This morning while watering I discovered a large branch of one of my tomato plants had blown out of its cage in our last storm! It was only bent (maybe a 5” radius curve) near the base, so I lifted it up and tied it, this time, but it was still “dewey” while the middle and tops of the other plants had dried - good thing for them, as the sun was already a-scorchin’. I didn’t want the repositioned branch’s leaves to sun scald, so I found an old worn-thin & torn shirt intended for the rag box, and draped it over the side of the plant the repositioned branch is on. Half an hour later I checked and all was dry, so I pulled the shirt/screen off so the plant gets some sun before shade comes around. (Normally this spot gets full sun until 2 pm or so.)
These plants don’t know how lucky they are!
Next I need to see if I have any extra fiberglass screen material around: Not for the plants, but to put in the windows of our Chevy Tahoe. I like to leave the windows open in sunny, hot weather so the interior cooks less. But, the grain elevators just to our west began processing corn a few days ago, and today we are getting the “red snow” (russet-colored chaff) big time. :-(
I’ve been going through LOTS of lemonade, so while @ Wally World yesterday, I decided to take a chance on this:
It works out to be cheaper than the Great Value pink lemonade mix on clearance! Plus it has natural food coloring and flavors.
Will it be any good? I guess I’ll find out in a big way. (I bought the “single”, but that is still a lot.)
If it is awful, WW is pretty good about returns... But, most reviews are quite good, with just a couple extreme negatives. (My fingers are crossed.)
.
I would not have even gone to town yesterday, but I had to rescue my wife. She thought our 2013 Outback was toast. I almost thought so too, from her description, but, it turned out it was just a failed weld joint in the exhaust system, right at the inlet of the rear muffler cannister. Weld joints seem to almost always be the failure point. Anyway, even hitting the gas pedal lightly would cause a LOUD rattle. Since a large length of pipe was “left hanging” (but not dragging!), I rigged up a “get you home” hanger with, literally, clothes hanger wire.
The rest of the piping looks fairly good, so, I’ll probably just splice in a fix, and rig a better hanger to be on the safe side.
??
98 deg. F, clear and calm, and NWS has bumped us up to 99 deg. for three days’ highs (including today). Luckily the humidity is moderate, but I can’t recommend being out in the sun for long!
The meal after the funeral service went well ... there was enough food for the 90 folks who stayed after to eat. All of my ‘Mississippi Green Beans” disappeared & if I say so myself, they were really good.
My niece’s fiance was there & asked me if I like ‘maters. I told him I loved tomatoes. His farm is across the road from the church & the next thing I knew, there was a box with 40 beautiful tomatoes, 2 zucchini & 2 yellow squash on the backseat of the car! He’s a super nice guy - raises beautiful alfalfa & poultry.
Storm clouds in the distance, but they moved on. The sun is out & it’s hot, so I expect more storms to show up this evening.
Just marking my place. I have 3 threads I catch up on. Nice fix on the muffler.
That is a lovely gift. He sounds like a keeper.
That's cool. :-)
I just wish Mo' Nature was a little cooler. The air temperature 5' above ground level, under the large awning that shades our back porch, was 107 deg. F when I came in around 3:30 pm. Granted it's all a SW exposure.
10-MINUTE CREAM CHEESE PASTA / serves 2-3
No. That recipe would serve BEAU, LOL! Another great use for cream cheese.
Sure wish I had a milk cow. :(
We alternate between the regular Lemonade and Tea w/Lemon (both sugar free) from Walmart. The knock-off version of Crystal Lite.
I also make Sun Tea quite a bit in the summer months. May as well use the Sun for something other than my recurring skin cancer! ;) (Oh, yeah - and LIFE ON EARTH as we know it!)

That Martha has an answer for EVERYTHING! :)
Yay! More Free Food!
Mom and I will clean out all tomatoes that are ripe this weekend. She’ll take a few boxes home to share with her neighbors and I want to give a box to my ex-Amish neighbor who practically does hand flips when he sees me coming with tomatoes. ;)
A great recipe when the food budget is shot.....
but you can still dig up a couple bucks for cream cheese.
You could even throw in whatever garden veggies are hanging around.
*** These plants don’t know how lucky they are!***
I say that pretty often about the plants in my beds! And the pets (indoor and outdoor ones)!

Christmas present, maybe?
To the degree I can “take it”, I try to do cooking outside in this kind of weather. I have one of those little 1000 watt single element electric burners on the back porch and use it often, even scooting it and the pot being heated into the sun, when practical. The biggest problem is needing a turn off timer sometimes.
We have a small toaster oven on the shelf on the back (house) wall, too, and of course it has a timer. I have heavy duty switches that would fit in the control section of the toaster oven, and the toaster oven is 1500 watts. The burner is only 1000 watts. SO, long story short, I can direct power from the oven elements to the burner if I don’t need both. OR, I can search online for a minutes-programmable countdown AC power timer.
Then I can say to my wife: “Look, Love! I didn’t burn the rice!”
I just wish I liked tea better! Sometimes the caffeine would be helpful...
But, MAN! Those Mini Jersey's are CUTE...with a high fat content. I can relate, LOL!

Same here. Cute with a somewhat high fat content. I’ve held up pretty well over the years, but time has been an enemy lately. (I am my own worst critic.) Still flexible, thank goodness. (I took a bit of a spill a few days ago. Landed on my right knee. I guess I fall well. Scratched up and swelled up a little for a day or two. Everything is back to normal as of a couple of days ago.)
