It seems that everyone has now seen pictures of a barren Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for USC’s home opener against the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday. In fact, the poor attendance for Lincoln Riley’s Trojan squad got so much attention that the university itself felt the need to issue a statement in response.
In a statement to USA Today, USC reiterated the “high expectations” it has for its home crowds and reassured the public that LA Coliseum will have a better atmosphere throughout the rest of the season.
“We understand the factors that impacted Saturday’s attendance,” the statement read. “We have high expectations and a premier home schedule this season, and we know the competitive advantage an electric Coliseum atmosphere can provide our program. We thank our fans who showed up Saturday and look forward to seeing increased attendance the rest of the season.”
Several non-football factors were partly to blame for the lackluster crowd on Saturday. For one, it was a Week 0 game that kicked off at noon local time. Football season hasn’t even begun in earnest, and it clearly wasn’t front of mind for those in Southern California on Saturday. Quality of the opponent also played a role.

#94 DT for USC. A fella named Luke Wafle. He was in high school just 3 months ago. A top 10 recruit in the country. Saw him for just a few plays and he’ll be playing on Sundays. If I was his coach or his father I’d let him play just enough to prove he belongs in the pros. Play him on 3rd down only. Allow him to be the #1 draft pick after 3 years even if it means sitting out his 3rd year in college. He’s that good. I only say that because Jadeveon Clowney was good enough to start in the pros coming out of high school. Injuries kept him from cashing in big time. Injury prevention is all that matters these days.
They would have shown up had it been a pro hamas rally
Last time I was at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was in the early ‘60s to see the Dodgers before they moved to Dodger stadium. I understand the stadium is in a bad neighborhood now and don’t think I’d go there.
Kiffin has coached and screwed up more D1 programs than Billy Martin had manager times with the Yankees.

When he gets his millions, he can give back to USC by funding the Wafle House
If the Mexican national team had been playing soccer there, it would have been a total sellout crowd.
💯

The liberals destroy everything in sighe, and yet they still maintain power via NGOs.
The destruction is not a bug, it's a design feature. Bewcause they want to destroy this nation.
Meh, USC normally has poor attendance. Time of year or quality of opponent seldom matters. Too much completion with other sporting events combined with traffic and sky-high ticket prices.
Same with Rice University in Houston. Football stadium was built to seat 70,000 fans; enrollment at Rice about 4500 undergraduates and another 4500 graduate students.
Yeah, parking used to be in effectively a ghetto.
Took your chances on what you found returning to it.
The official attendance won’t be in for 30 days. Ahem.
Week zero opener!!!
Week zero game should be reserved for international games in Ireland or England.
Why? No one in either of those countries gives a hoot about American football. Probably 99% of the people over there wouldn't know a touchdown from a touchback or a pass from a punt.
Or soccer.
I have always found street parking since I started attending games in 1973 and have never paid to park in a lot. From 1973 to 1999 I never missed a single home game including Rose Bowls. But I don't like having to buy digital tickets or not being able to use cash to buy food and drinks in the stadium. I haven't attended a game since 2022, although I may go next week.
