Oviedo man Evan Meyer got caught destroying a Flock camera.
Only it wasn't a Flock camera at all. It was a decoy!
That's right, the police 3D-printed themselves a fake Flock camera and set it up to catch whatever freedom-loving kook who was stealing all of Big Brother's surveillance gear.
Police said Evan Meyer used pruning shears to cut down the decoy camera before smashing it. Video from the arrest shows officers taking Meyer into custody Thursday night.
According to police, the fake camera was installed as a ‘clone bait camera' after several Flock cameras were stolen between late July and early August.
Meyer is facing three felonies over the destruction of the fake camera: criminal mischief causing more than $1,000 in damage, grand theft involving property valued between $750 and $5,000, and damaging or taking a computer, electronic device, or related equipment.
Of course, he might be able to get out of all those charges if his lawyer can successfully argue that all he destroyed/stole was a cheap printed piece of plastic; there were no actual cameras or electronics involved.
Oviedo's mayor Megan Sladek, who is also a working lawyer, weighed in on the issue:
The whole thing is very interesting from a legal perspective. Mayor is a part-time job here in Oviedo, and I'm an attorney by day, so I'm probably looking at this with a bit different lens than the average person. Even if the guy knew it was a fake camera, that would still make it art, and it would still be vandalism.
Meyer is probably not getting away scot-free.
However, it does sound like the people of Oviedo may be free soon, at least from surveillance.

A perfect case for jury nullification — assuming it goes to trial by jury.

Everyone needs to be LOUD about how we’ll nullify these actions from the jury box.

Maybe its just me, but when jurisictions go to great pains to disguise these Flock cameras, or in this case, put up decoys, it immediately raises a red flag to me that putting up those cameras (without public notice or input) and their use is not on the ‘up and up’.

A 3d empty camera is not electronic equipment. It’s a box.
He also didn’t steal anything, or anything of value, anyway. Be misdemeanor theft and criminal mischief, at best.
He needs a good lawyer to defeat the Nazis. And a jury to nullify.

The joke is on them. He is really a New Jersey man set up as a decoy Florida man.
Why did they need a fake camera? Why not a real one?

One thing I don’t quite understand about the anger against flock cameras is why are so many people upset over them? Considering the number of other cameras we are on already? I take a train to work and there are cameras in the parking garage and train platform. There are probably cameras on the train itself. I get off on a platform downtown and back on a camera. I walk to my office passing multiple federal buildings all with cameras. I doubt there is a time in the 15 minute walk I am not on a camera. My own office has cameras on the doors, the security checkpoints, the stairway I use and in the hallway I walk down to my office. The only time I am not on a camera is in my actual office and when I am in the bathroom. What are additional street cams doing that is above and beyond what is already happening?
But police are allowed ... even encouraged ... to LIE.
That's what we're dealing with here.
Just so I understand: libs have a genuine moral conviction that deportation is a deeply evil. Thus they believe that they are justified in attacking federal officers and facilities. Jurors in their communities, who have the same deeply held belief, refuse to convict them. So you’re cool with that? Good old jury nullification, right?

Apparently the Oviedo police dept. needs a citizen review board.
