now just because there is a data center being built in some random place lets just call it Malaga does not mean there will be tons of jobs there.
Sure there are lots of construction jobs in the beginning, and there are people who realize there will be maybe 40 or more jobs that will have decent pay and those people will want to build houses or buy houses, and need extra infrastructure.
That is the minor job impact. The companies who build racks, network gear, servers, the oem companies who make the processors, ram and hard drives all have been adding employees to handle the demand.
I don’t know how many foundries have been built in us yet, but I know there has been some push to do that, which also will create jobs.
Then there is the surveillance state that is about to go on a massive hiring spree so they can analyze all the collected location, social media, and digital currency data and sure in the beginning mostly as make-work, well until things get really fun for everyone.
good points, all. the question is does the neighborhood taxpayer have to subsidize (in all the myriad ways, power, water, waste, pollution, parking, congestion, and gory financials) it’s construction and continued operations?
if it does, then it should at the very least be put to a general vote with informed consent (a true cost benefit analysis apart from jobs created or lost).

They’ll need a few janitors to sweep and mop the floor and probably a security guard or two.
The anti-datacenter people always talk about data centers using too much water. The cooler system use distilled water so that nothing accumulates or grows in the coolers. They’ll fill up the systems when they build the data centers, and if they need to top them up, it won’t be from the local taps, it’ll be from other sources of distilled water.
My wife breathlessly told me the other day that Trump says the data centers have promised not to use much water and that they will generate their own electricity.
Just this week a new DC was announced in the Tulsa area. Providing the power from the grid will be Oklahoma’s favorite price escalator, Public Service Company of Oklahoma. I think I heard they are also asking the Utility Commission for another 25% rate hike even before the DC was announced. Nothing was said about the water.
Shouldn’t the increase in property taxes from the construction of Datacenters be factored into the discussion of their viability in a local area
Assuming the state and local governments haven’t exempted the developers from property taxes as an incentive to build, their value only serves to generate high property taxes
In addition, if a government said datacenters must produce their own power or pay the local utility an amount to produce extra power to cover the data center without impacting local residents, wouldn’t tha alleviate a lot of the concerns
Senseless hysteria
Like the Internet itself AI is an exciting new technology that is getting more money tossed at it than it is going to pay back. Like Dutch tulips once upon a time.
We are lemmings when all this is done and dusted. This two Party system has screwed us over because we ignore foundational ideas and embrace ideology wrapped in a blue and red Party bow.
Nothing to worry about once Musk’s “universal high income” kicks in. Jobs won’t matter.
Regardless of the job created, what data are these centers collecting and on whom? It would be logical to infer that as Big Brother spies more on citizens, it needs to store that data somewhere to draw upon it later. Flock camera images are just part of the data from spying collected. Until the need for such data centers is justified, the economic arguments are suspect.
Look at it this way. We know prophecy. It is not difficult to see data centers and their function in prophecy. We are likely fighting a very up hill battle here.
Most info on data centers being pushed by the media is BS. I develop these facilities for a living and we use closed loop cooling systems using de-ionized water that may be replaced once a year at best, community impact, none. Our power mostly comes from solar and utility scale battery systems again community impact, none. I do have an issue with the Meta and Google’s of the industry building these mega centers that are extremely disruptive to the communities they are in, you cannot come into a community like Godzilla stomping over Tokyo and expect everyone to accept what you want . AI is here but we can live and work with it to our benefit or try to fight it like carriage makers fought the motor car. Our world is changing and we need to use it to our advantage.
It only takes two brain cells to see the Elephant in the room. Each one is DESIGNED to eliminate hundreds of thousands of jobs in all sectors of our GDP. The long run cost of jobs is hundreds of thousands more than the tiny gains from these facilities.
These Data Centers create few jobs and for the life of me can’t understand why Trump is in love with them..Guess his rich buddies invest in them...
