Is J.D. Vance a Leftist?
X-Twitter ^ | August 24, 2026 | The Mighty Quinn

Posted on 08/24/2026 4:52:49 PM PDT by TBP

I'm getting a lot of scathing pushback calling JD Vance a leftist so I'm laying out why it's true in a straight-forward, semi-nuanced way. It is not me making the claim, the following is what Vance has personally stated he believes in.

1. Vance calls himself a post-liberal. Post-liberalism rejects free-market capitalism and individualism in favor of the government securing economic and social well-being (social welfare). The counter-argument is to recognize the responsibility of individuals for their own welfare (food, shelter, well-being).

2. Vance says he believes in Hamiltonian economics. Hamiltonian economics has shared commonality with modern left-of-center ideology primarily through its advocacy for an active, interventionist federal government that shapes the economy rather than letting the free market determine the direction of markets.

3. Vance has stated he agrees with the politics of Huey Long, Louisiana's leftist governor of the 1930's. Huey Long functioned as a left-wing populist whose economic policies focused heavily on wealth redistribution, even to the point of proposing heavy-handed capital taxation on personal fortunes in order to distribute individual earnings to those who hadn't earned what they received.

These 3 points are objectively accurate about what JD Vance believes and what conservatives fight against. To protest the reality of Vance's beliefs is to reject stolid truth.

America’s Governor has an eight-year record of conservative success.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And he’s shown extraordinary competency, ingenuity, and tenacity.
What an odd post.
From the info about him:
The Mighty Quinn @Actsout Reagan/DeSantis Conservative • Skiing + mountains + ranching = best life living • Mostly Irish • Never voting for Trump or Democrats
Given the Trump/Vance administration has over two more years in office, and given that the other choice in the last presidential election was a possible Harris/Walz administration, this is nowhere near to "politics is the art of the possible."
This fellow in Colorado hasn't really much to say except "whaaaaa."
""Vance says he believes in Hamiltonian economics."
Which Hamilton? The Negro Hamilton or the White Hamilton?
‘Vance is merely claiming that the government needs to set policy by aiming towards the “economic and social well-being” of the whole country, and not just capital owners. ‘
Capitalism under the rule of law because “to secure these rights governments are instituted among men” (or something like that).
There’s a reason the left hated him in the beginning.
--- "It is also dangerous as once uniquely American technical knowledge and industrial capacity is disseminated to foreign competitors and military adversaries. That isn't 'leftism.' That's just America first."
A fine observation,
This is a week in which Canada's China "rebranding" through Canadian companies is being reported, with Carney and his ilk angry at tariffs,
As to the comments about Catholics ( I am not one ), one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was a Catholic.
Libertarians pretend to be conservatives, but free trade means open borders, more or less, which liberals love. So when citing conservative principles, one should be clear that letting products made with low wage labor in China ravage American jobs is not "America first."
Absolutely not and this article is a piece of S—t written as one of the opening salvos against the probable Republican Presidential Nominee. Vance better get his shields up because when they are through throwing rocks at Trump, he is next.
Tariffs are taxes; we pay them. They raise prices. That causes fewer sales of American goods, less American production, and job loss.
Now, the argument is made that the tariffs will only drive up the prices of foreign goods. Maybe, but let’s say we drive the price of foreign goods up 10%. American producers will take advantage of that and raise prices 8% so they’s still slightly under the foreign price.
When the price of the whole product sector increases, sales of that product sector go down, unless it’s a must-buy like gasoline. Even then, if you drive less, you buy less gas.
So you’re rally not protecting anyone except the wealthy Establishment.
Picture some "conservative" neocons. It helps to visualize.
And then read about a "conservative" according to some views.....
Barack Obama, conservative Washington Post, 22 November 2022.
Aren't labels fascinating as they spin round and round....
I suspect you are confusing libertarianism with conservatism.
Conservatives support a "free market," which means one closed to subsidized foreign imports, illegal aliens who work illegally not just because the aren't here legally but also because they are often employed by employers who are tax cheats and who fail to observe American labor laws and regulations. A "free market" also means the gov should break up monopolies in airlines, cell service, banks, distribution, and many other areas that negatively affect almost every part of the American economy. It should also support by tax and import policies (and even sometimes direct subsidies) industries that are vital to US defense.
What it should not do is grant special favors to particular industries or bailouts without first bankrupting the recipient, taking ownership, and reselling it to new stock holders. If bankruptcy and foreclosure are good enough for you and me, they're good enough for GM, Boeing and the banks.
Vance is trying to avoid falling into the mistakes that conservatives have made. Maybe he goes too far in the opposite direction. Maybe he doesn’t. In any case, it’s good that he doesn’t follow the “borderless world” line.
Huey Long? It’s complicated, like everything else.
