Like the cuckoo bird who lays its eggs in other birds’ nests, Colorado’s leftward lurch began some 20 or so years ago and has accelerated steadily ever since, fueled by disaffected cuckoo birds from California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and other assorted pockets of liberal mania, who laid their eggs liberally across their newly usurped state.
To be fair, several formerly conservative states have suffered this fate to varying degrees, but Coloradan transplants have transformed the state with a vengeance. For example, in the 2020 national election, Proposition 115 would have “prohibited abortions in Colorado beyond 22 weeks, the average point of fetal viability, except in cases to protect the life of the mother.” That measure lost by 18 points, so Colorado remains one of only seven states where abortions remain legal up until the moment of birth.
But nothing epitomizes Colorado’s proud, progressive creds like SB25-003 -- the sweeping gun control law that hit the ground on August 1, 2026.
In the early 1980s one could drive a bit outside of Denver towards the hills and pass speed limit signs adorned with bullet holes. Now, however, SB25-003 prohibits
activity involving semiautomatic firearms, and, in connection therewith, prohibiting the manufacture, distribution, transfer, sale, and purchase of specified semiautomatic firearms, classifying a device that increases the rate of fire of a semiautomatic firearm as a dangerous weapon, and making an appropriation.
Specifically, “[T]he act defines a "specified semiautomatic firearm" as a semiautomatic rifle or semiautomatic shotgun with a detachable magazine or a gas-operated semiautomatic handgun with a detachable magazine (emphasis added).”
This bill does not represent an outright ban; gosh, that might violate the 2nd Amendment. Rather, there is now a permit-to-purchase process that law-abiding Coloradans must complete before buying a restricted firearm, the mechanics of which are outlined by

No manufacturer or vendor of any type of arms or ammunition should sell any device or object to any government agency of any type in the State of Colorado.
I’m having to go through re-training to renew my CCW. I have to get a background check to buy ammo although I’m an hour from Cheyenne. They are being sued.
They don't care. Seriously.
The politicians want to ban them all. They start with anything they can scare "Karen" with. "Karen" is irrational and ruled by her ignorant fears ... but she reliably goes out and votes for democRATs. DemocRATs know that stoking "Karen's" fears will get her out to vote.
It's not about "public safety". It never was. It's not about "crime fighting". It never was.
It's all about controlling YOU.
Government wants to disarm YOU ... so it can do to YOU things YOU would not tolerate if you were armed.

Makes me want to see a resurrected Thomas Jefferson march into Colorado’s capitol building, hold the Constitution up high and shout “Shall Not Be Infringed.”

Can you imagine school students having to pass every test with a score of at least 90 percent?
I still remember the 1960s when it was the 5 shot bolt action army surplus rifle that was demonized till it was banned.
The same rifle made off the same machinery and from the same company BUT SENT TO A POLICE FORCE was still legal to import as it was not “military.”

I saw part of the list.
The AR-15 is banned.
The Mini-14 is not banned.
The state is being sued for restricting purchase without you taking the safety class and getting on an ‘approved’ list. I think it may be the CSSA sueing but I’m not sure. To my knowledge it is part of the legislation they passed that they are requiring a background check for ammo purchase.
“Gun control” makes sense only when understood as a naked power grab; its sole purpose is government dominance and control of the people. Arguing about crime control or “dangerous features” is just playing their game ... and that is always a losing proposition.
“Applicants must obtain a third-party background check, submit an application and supporting documents to a sheriff, pay government fees, locate an approved trainer, complete at least 12 hours of in-person instruction over at least two days, pass a written examination with a minimum passing score of 90 percent, and have personal information submitted to a public database.
Even after completing that process, they must undergo another background check at the point of sale and wait another three days before taking possession. [snip]”
That sounds like all kinds of infringement to me.
As time goes on, I continue to be amazed at the wisdom our founder’s had as they laid the framework for this nation. We continue to be blessed by God, through them, while modernity’s politicians demonsttrate that they are cut from a much lesser cloth.

I may be wrong, I see so many alerts and posts.
I bit the bullet last week (so to speak) and successfully completed the training, met all requirements, and paid the State and training fees to exercise my God Given Rights inside the border of Colorado.
I’m hoping that this will allow me to be party to the eventual Class-Action Civil Rights Violations lawsuit.
It was a fairly difficult decision to make personally. Do I subject myself to tyranny in hopes of future restoration of rights? Or do I protest the whole shebang and ‘self-limit’ my rights by not abiding by the law?
The process is much more complicated than what others have laid out here. Here are my observations of the impact:
1. The enforcement and tracking of this new law (Aug 1st, 2026, passed last year) is administered and enforced by hundreds of State departments, Divisions, and all Law Enforcement agencies. (”He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.”)
2. The Department of Revenue maintains the list of “Specified Semi-Automatic Firearms” (SSF). Faceless bureaucratic accountants are in charge of doling out how you may exercise your rights. (Now up to 146 pages as MtnClimber points out, subject to amendment at any time).
3. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is in charge of the training requirements, they make the standardized training classes (powerpoint slide shows and instructor certification for private trainers).
4. All LEOs in the State are expected to enforce these new requirements. Many (more than half?) of our 60+ Sheriffs are already on record that they will not enforce unconstitutional laws (e.g. magazine restrictions).
5. There are two versions of this class available: a four-hour class and a twelve-hour class. If you have a Hunter’s Safety Card on file with the CPW, you are eligible for the four-hour class. If you do not, you must take the long version - two six-hour blocks over two days. I believe they’re both all classroom, but I know the four-hour is just classroom.
6. First, you must create an account on the new CPW “Firearms Safety System” in order to start the process. This is where CPW will forward your application to your county sheriff affirming whether you are eligible for the 4-hr or 12-hr class. Cost = $52 to CPW.
7. Second, you must pay out of pocket and authorize a “third-party background investigation (enhanced)”. More accounts, more log-ins. The “enhanced” part is they do credit check and national sex-offender database searches in addition to the normal 4473-style criminal background checks. (apparently more than they do for daycare providers, teachers, Tim Walz, or Denny Hastert). Cost = about $35.
8. Third, with your successful approval from the CPW and private background check agency, you may now submit this documentation to your County Sheriff for their review and approval.
9. Fourth, upon review and approval, the Sheriff *can* issue a “Firearms Safety Course” authorization that *ALLOWS* you to take a training course to satisfy the new law. No guarantee that you will pass. Thankfully our Sheriff is waiving all administrative fees for applicants and they are processing these applications within about 3-4 business days. Other Counties can slow-walk approval and charge administrative fees but I don’t have first-hand knowledge about what’s going on elsewhere.
10. Fifth, if you jump through all these hoops, you are “eligible” to purchase or transfer a firearm on the Department of Revenue list of SSF. But only for five years. The permit is only good for five years.
I don’t like communists. Just another “Five-Year-Plan”.
My class was through a local (State-Certified) instructor. There were twelve of us there for the four-hour certification. Two civilians, one local police officer, nine active duty and retired military.
Evidently, there are lower cost classes if you go to CPW training, but they have no interest in passing anyone. I chose to pay about $125 for private training. I’ve no idea how long the waiting period is to get into a CPW class.
Sum total for me to exercise my 2nd Amendment rights is around $200, four hours of classroom, three hours of applying online, six days of processing.
Then, if I choose to purchase a semi-auto, I must still go through a federal and State (CBI) background check and wait three days to bring it home.
But only during this Five Year Plan.
The list of Constitutional and Civil Rights violations are too numerous.

Denver has now “licensed” me to purchase a rifle, pending approval, that Uncle Sam handed me when I was 17 years old and carried for 25 years. And those were full-auto.
God help this nation. God damn the leftist judges and commies.
