Holiday-hating Francesca Hong loses to moderate David Crowley in Wisconsin gubernatorial primary

WASHINGTON — Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley beat Democratic socialist Francesca Hong in a come-from-behind victory during the Wisconsin gubernatorial primary Tuesday night.

Crowley, 40, was ahead of the 37-year-old state representative and member of the Democratic Socialists of America 39.8% to 39.4% when the race was called by the Associated Press at 3:34 a.m.

Surveys ahead of the Badger State Democratic contest had consistently showed Hong besting Crowley by double digit percentage points. Crowley had also dropped out of the race weeks before and even endorsed another opponent, before re-entering the contest and receiving the backing of outgoing Gov. Tony Evers.

“Our team campaigned clean, our souls are intact and we really made meaningful change for the progressive movement,” Hong’s campaign Becky Cooper said after the DSA pol conceded.

The margin between the two candidates was less than one percentage point, meaning Hong could’ve requested a recount before her concession.

However, because the margin was wider than 0.25 percentage points, she would’ve had to foot the bill.

Crowley, who is seeking to be Wisconsin’s first black governor, hasn’t addressed his supporters yet but his campaign manager, Garren Randolph, said the pol was “grateful” to voters who took part in the primary.

Crowley is no moderate.

MILWAUKEE — Last night, the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Wisconsin, and the law firm of Covington & Burling filed an amended complaint in their class-action lawsuit against the city of Milwaukee over its police department’s vast stop-and-frisk program. The revised complaint adds three named plaintiffs to the lawsuit, one of whom is Representative David Crowley, a state legislator representing Wisconsin’s 17th Assembly District. Like the other named plaintiffs and tens of thousands of other Milwaukeeans of color, Rep. Crowley has been subject to an unconstitutional stop and frisk by the Milwaukee police without reasonable suspicion of criminal activity and based on racial profiling.

One evening before he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly, Rep. Crowley was walking with his godbrother in Milwaukee. “We heard gunshots in the distance, so we walked in the other direction to avoid trouble. A patrol car stopped in front of us, and two officers jumped out with guns drawn and pointed right at us. I was terrified,” said Rep. Crowley.

He and his godbrother put up their hands. The police frisked them, taking their wallets from their pants pockets and pulling their IDs from the wallets. One officer asked if the two men had thrown a gun into the field where they had been walking.

“The police treated us like suspects, yet we had done nothing wrong. The officers drew their guns on us, searched us without our consent, and never explained why,” said Rep. Crowley. “As young Black men, we were presumed guilty. The police decided that the Constitution doesn’t apply to us.”. . .

Wisconsin GOP lawmakers force Kaepernick’s name out of Black History resolution

MADISON, Wis. - The state Assembly passed a resolution Tuesday to honor prominent black Americans during Black History Month in February — but only after Republicans blocked it until black Democratic lawmakers agreed to remove the name of quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Democratic Rep. David Crowley of Milwaukee, who authored the resolution, called the episode “a textbook example of white privilege” and a “slap in the face.”

“Many of these people that you don’t agree with will still be in the history books that your children and grandchildren will be reading,” Crowley said on the Assembly floor.

Kaepernick, who was born in Milwaukee, has drawn a firestorm of controversy after he began kneeling in 2016 during the national anthem to protest poor treatment of black Americans.

Supporters say Kaepernick is exercising his First Amendment right to protest what he sees as racial injustice. Critics say he is denigrating the American flag and American principles.

He is one of more than two dozen prominent black Americans proposed by the Legislature’s black lawmakers to be honored during February, including former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and baseball giant Reggie Jackson.

Crowley said Kaepernick was included, in part, because he donated $25,000 to Milwaukee nonprofit Urban Underground, which works with teens. . .
