🚨 WTF?! Maine’s New Democrat Senate candidate Troy Jackson is in a ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP with his COUSIN, and has TWO CHILDREN with her

THIS is the guy the Democrat Party swapped Graham Platner out for 🤣

Per The Main Wire’s @SteveRob, Jackson and his “partner,” Lana Pelletier, share great grandparents, making them second cousins.

They then decided to pop out two children.

The Democrats are having a REALLY tough time finding candidates who aren’t total freaks 😂

My understanding is that a marriage between second cousins is generally legal. The docs would probably counsel against it, but a line has to be drawn somewhere. Human beings are ALL distant cousins, after all ... and very often the relationship is closer than two people expect.

The incest taboo has two taproots. One is the genetic risk involved with marrying close relations and combining two recessive genes that have become rare precisely because they are maladaptive. I’m not going to go back and research the Blue Fugates now, but it is an instructive case study that emerged in the earlies in Appalachia, when there simply weren’t very many people around and the selection pool was limited.

The second and socially more important part of the taboo has to do with incest and the sexual exploitation of minors. Virtually all societies understand that young children should be protected — and the potential threat from parents, older siblings and close relations who are in close and frequent proximity to the family is real. That’s why there is an incest taboo in most (all?) cultures.

Sometimes really hard cases arise when brothers and sisters are separated at birth or in very early childhood, typically because they are orphaned and aren’t adopted as a pair. On occasion, they meet years later, not knowing they are related. One thing leads to another. Oopsie. But the thing is, no one had any reason to think anything was amiss.

This happens even more frequently when cousins are involved.

I’m not going to go into hysterics over the matter if two people married not knowing they were closely related. How the law should sort that out can be debated.

In the Maine situation, the circumstances would matter. It’s abnormal enough to raise eyebrows. Most families would steer their young people towards other potential romantic interests. But young people don’t always listen, and if the interactions were initially limited enough and distant enough — a second cousin that you had met a couple of times at big family reunions, the summer picnic at the great grandmother’s place where you only really know six of the 150 people there — a relationship that develops much, much later in adulthood doesn’t strike me as inherently creepy. Still inadvisable, yes, but not creepy.

BUT ... if this developed in a hot mess of family dramas with both partners jumping into an affair with kin caught up in the same hot steaming mess, it gets creepy fast. It’s not unlike very creepy relationships that can develop in friend groups or professional and business circles, when social norms about friendship and professional boundaries are violated. Those boundaries developed for very good reasons as well: the pastor really shouldn’t be sleeping with the organist whose husband is having an affair with the wife of a member of the congregation whose husband teaches at the church run school and is sleeping around with the junior and senior girls, and that’s before the coaches get involved ....

We don’t all live like democrats, Hollywood execs, and NBA players.

Yeah, this is dumb.

We all come from a long tradition of cousins marrying cousins.

A couple hundred years ago, towns were small and remote - you knew fifty people tops all your life - and they were likely all some sort of cousin.

Most people don’t know enough about their own family tree to talk shit about second cousins marrying - it was quite common.

And third cousins? Who keeps track of third cousins?

P.S. This is also the kind of thing that a campaign — and the state party — should have thought through very carefully, especially when the candidate is essentially selected.

I am perfectly happy to kneecap democrats when they trip over themselves with this kind of stuff. But kneecapping is merciful compared to what I would like to do to Republican candidates — and the county and state GOP organizations — when they keep putting forward candidates who have zipper problems, financial problems, alcohol or drug problems, etc. One of the things party organizations used to do was vet the candidates and have the come to Jesus talks with problem cases before they embarrassed the party. It didn’t always work that way — the democrats knew all about JFK, RFK and Teddy, as well as LBJ and Bill Clinton, and they just turned a blind eye and counted on a lapdog press to play along with the coverup. But at this point, aggressive immoralism and reckess behavior is being nmormalized. I don’t demand that politicians be saints, but they should stay within decent limits if they put themselves forward to lead.

Anyhoq, don’t wait for opposition research to find the story and spring it as a trap. Assuming it’s legal with nothing creepy lurking in the weeds, get it out there in a matter of fact way. Keep it short. Keep it true. Define it in your own terms.

But they really should just get married. Back in a healthier era, when the couple started himmin’ and herring, the uncles and cousins would have showed up with shotguns and a pastor in tow. But I suppose in modern democrat circles, popping out illegitimate kids is a status marker.

It was nice getting older. Mom entrusted me with the family secrets. Her mothers sister was not married to the man she lived with...

One of my favorite uncles was married when he met my aunt.

And it goes on and on...I've kept the family secrets.

I don’t understand this narrative. It’s legal to marry your first cousin in many states, let alone your second cousin. Why can’t we focus on the ISSUES, not who he married?

Isn’t there a foxworthy joke about marrying your cousin?

You must

Be a Redneck If...” routine:
“...you’ve been married three times and still have the same in-laws.”
“...your family tree doesn’t branch.”
“...your primary source of income is padded by divorce settlements from your own family.”
“...you go to a family reunion to pick up women.”

this is nonsense: Second cousins share great-grandparents (but not grandparents), with an average shared DNA of about 3.125%. This is distant enough that no state bans such marriages.

You need to learn a little more about DNA before making grand statements. I’ll send you a tutorial.

So it “looks like”?

And then you make the claim that it was “nice gifts you two gave your kids”?

Do you know how ignorant that reads? How embarrassing.

The way you made it sound, Troy Jackson has more DNA in common with a gorilla than his second cousin. Be more clear next time post, please.

Oh look, here’s the protest from the genetics Karen. They may have given their kids a difficult and shorter life instead of looking a bit further out to reproduce, genius. No one closer than 3rd cousins should be having babies together and that’s pushing it. That goes for royalty as well as people who live in the same holler. I’ve seen it in areas where a lot of people with the same last name live in the same valley.

Given the apparent subtle approval to this behavior on this thread despite what it does to the offspring, perhaps more folks should be traveling over a few more hills for their dates. Talk about ignorant. It’s selfish and doesn’t help the nation.
