Boy, 6, who has autism is suspended from school for biting his sandwich into the shape of a GUN

A six-year-old autistic boy was suspended from a school in Georgia after he bit his sandwich into the shape of a gun and pointed it at his classmate, his family said.

John Medina, a first-grader at Sara Harp Minter Elementary School in Fayette County, was kicked out last March after administrators saw what happened, according to his parents and school records, Atlanta News First reported.

Kristin Medina, the boy's mother, recalled the school calling her and saying her son was not welcome back after the lunchtime incident.

'And you're just like baffled,' Kristin told the outlet, stating that she believes the school did not properly consider her child's disability before deciding to suspend him.

Although the incident occurred more than a year ago, Kristin said she wanted to bring renewed attention to it in hopes that administrators could have a better understanding of how kids with disabilities act.

According to school records obtained by the outlet, more than two dozen disciplinary actions have been issued to John, including some that involved him kicking and punching other students during recess.

The school disciplined John at least 33 times, including 14 suspensions, since 2023, the records stated.

John was previously suspended for pointing a water bottle at someone else while making gun noises, and he was reprimanded for drawing a pilgrim shooting a turkey, records showed.

Schools are not care. Parents are care.

“Such schools just want any matching funds that would come with a full roster of students, regardless of that student’s needs or background. “

Had a friend who’s son has down’s syndrome. The school took the kid until he was 21. You know what he did in class? He slept in a Bean bag chair all day. Would make his mom so angry she couldn’t get him to sleep at night. When he was in grade school they had a swing he could sit in a, in the classroom and bounce up and down all day. That is about all he did. He can’t speak, read, write, honestly sending him to school was waste of taxpayers money.

If a kid thought that everytime he misbehaved, he was getting an azz whipping, he would stop misbehaving. That worked for all of us. “Autism” included.

See my post 22, I agree with you.

State institutions should have never been closed.

and he was reprimanded for drawing a pilgrim shooting a turkey

I was the classroom star when I drew the very same thing back in 1957 and the teacher taped my drawing to the wall next to the blackboard.

Being a fly on the wall at that meeting would be fun.

Same in the 1970’s

Today’s educators are so stupid they probably think the pilgrims picked up a turkey 🦃 at Walmart.

we had a kid at out high school named Joey. I think he finally graduated at the age of 21. He had the kindest heart there ever was. He was mentally disabled, but did not have the typical mongoloid features. I even think he manged to have a little job for a while—then he passed on. rather sad actually. Buy I do know that no one at the high school ever teased Joey that I knew of. In many aspects he was a grown man stuck in a four year olds mind... He could have been a savant though, I never knew about that...

If I were punished every time I chewed a sandwich into the shape of a gun as a kid I’d still be in prison

If he had bitten the sandwich into “F Trump,” he’d still be in school.

Throughout my life I’d been very careful and fortunate in choosing girlfriends to make sure they were the ones who wouldn’t dream of having a child with me. That meant almost every woman I’d ever had a relationship with. Then they would leave me and find some dirt bag to have a kid with. Saved me several lifetimes of needless heartache and grief.

My wife wasn’t a teacher, but she was a teacher’s aid, a paraprofessional, for 20 years. She said the last ten years were when she saw conditions getting worse. Not just the woke policies, but closing schools to save money and consolidating older kids into her school caused quite a few discipline problems, which the teachers were powerless to do anything about.

She retired in 2020. Earlier than planned, because they closed the school because of COVID. She told me, “ that’s it, it’s time …”

She hasn’t looked back.

Retired public school teacher here.

There are gaps in the story that have me questioning it. If the kid has been diagnosed with autism, then he has an I.E.P. (Individualized Educational Program) which protects him from discipline that might somehow be connected to his disability.

I.E.P. students and their parents have ‘rights’ not enjoyed by non-IEP students. Any long-term suspension requires a proceeding where lawyers for both the district and the child may be present. IEP students are guaranteed an education by the district ‘in the least restrictive environment possible’. If a district is un able or unwilling to provide such an education, the district is financially responsible to provide it.

So, either the mother is lying about her child’s autism, which is becoming a common claim, or she is ignorant of the rights that she and her child have.

But what if you were punished every time you attacked another student unprovoked.
