Mamdani plans 30% discounts at city-owned groceries — but it comes with basket of questions

The basket of goods comes with a basket of questions.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is pitching a vague discount of 30% “below typical retail prices” on a “core basket of goods” at his promised city-owned grocery stores — but New Yorkers aren’t buying it.

Folks interviewed by The Post have a list of questions about how the discount would work, what few items they’d have to choose from, and how much it would cost taxpayers to subsidize the lefty mayor’s scheme.

“F--- that,” said Deborah, a 53-year-old lifelong Harlem resident. “We’re all paying for that. So, all the s--- we buy at the bodegas and these little local stores — iced coffee, bags of ice, fruit drinks — that’s never going to be cheaper than in that supermarket.

“He’s wasting our f------ time and money,” she said. “Again.”

Mamdani announced Monday that a rotating list of items will be put up at “below typical retail prices,” with items including fresh produce, meat and seafood, plus staples like milk, cheese and bread.

“No exceptions, no gimmicks,” Mamdani vowed at a news conference at a Brooklyn food pantry.

City Hall projects the markdown will save shoppers an average of $90 a month or $1,000 a year, roughly around 15% off their bill.

… an official operator won’t be selected until spring 2027.

And the whole thing will collapse by fall 2027. Can’t wait.

1. Government subsidized grocery stores open at 30% lower prices
2. Local grocery stores cannot compete
3. They go out of business
4. City store becomes the only option
5. No competition
6. The “food desert” they set out to fix is now worse
7. Demand is high, supply is low
8. Empty shelves become the norm
9. City responds the only way it can: purchase limits “2 per customer”
10. Rationing occurs
11. A rush every day, hoarding, lines.
12. Working people are now standing in line, decreasing productivity
13. To control the bleeding, the city quietly shrinks the basket or lets quality slide
14. Wilted produce, thinner cuts, fewer options
15. Budget balloons anyway, because the subsidy never shrinks, only grows

Excellent summary of grocery profits.

Very slim, but volume is large. Even if it’s 1-3%.

The other aspect is all the employees. Millions of people employed to grow, package, deliver, stock, clean, and sell and checkout our groceries for us.

I don’t care if Wal-Mart, Kroger, Costco, or Piggly Wiggly makes a billion dollars in profits.

The left doesn’t understand the employment factor. All these people have jobs and buy their own stuff. Contributing to the overall economy.

~~~~~~~
Having said that, once the stockholders are paid, along with the owners, I think the companies might be obliged to give some back to their employees. But not because of the government.
It will be GOOD for the rest of America (other than New York City) to SEE FIRST HAND just how F’d up Socialism is because boy oh boy get ready if this get’s fully implemented it will, like falling dominoes, kick off sorts of unforeseen tragedies.
"It will be GOOD for the rest of America ..."
That is why I support it. We will finally have a test case of pure socialism that is proof of the superiority of capitalism.
At a little mom and pop store I frequent in WV, if they catch you stealing they make you stand outside at the busy intersection with a huge I Am A Thief sign around your neck until the cops come.
Then they hang a ln 8 x 10 glossy of you wearing that sign up in the store.
They have very few shoplifter issues .
😬
