Tokyo urges men to wear shorts to work, but some women say it's 'leg hair harassment'

As temperatures rise this summer, Japanese men are baring more leg at work than ever before.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is pushing company employees to ditch their usual suit and tie for more casual attire, featuring t-shirts, trainers - and shorts.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike introduced "Tokyo Cool Biz" in April, hoping to expand on her signature cool down initiative which has now become a widely recognised annual summer tradition.

Almost four months in, the newly allowed shorts in the office policy is getting mixed reviews.

Some commentators enjoy the relaxed rules, helping them work more comfortably. Others say the policy is unfair to women since they are still expected to wear tights when showing a part of their legs. And a few women describe the experience of "leg hair harassment" or a term coined online as "sunehara", referring to the discomfort of being forced to see their colleague's leg hair.

I have close friend and business colleague who is Japanese. One hot, humid August Tokyo day, he said the worst thing the western occupiers did to Japan was the suit and tie in summer.

I have lived in Japanese since 1985 and have never noticed the “ young women with hairy legs in nylons “ thing and I am a leg man . Japanese women generally have much less body hair than Western women and finer, lighter strands due to natural genetics . Many actively remove it because of strong social standards for grooming. My wife has never needed to shave her legs as she has virtually no hair on them .

I guess personal grooming habits have changed since you were in Japan.
I have lived here for 37 years and I have NEVER seen hairy legs or armpits on a Japanese women.

HAHAHA. Hi August.

I just sent a private email to Sushiman about my experiences in Japan. I had no idea that you spent so much time in Japan.

Things have no doubt changed for grooming over the past 40+ years. Asians, Germans, French, British.

My funny story is back in the early 1990s in Germany with a nurse attending my bride during her pregnancy. My wife, not the nurse. The German nurse, I’ll call Brunhilda, wore a nurse skirt.

Her legs were shaved on her calfs. Below the skirt. Above the skirt, she was sasquatch. Hilarious.

Spent a good amount of 2011,2012 in Japan on a US led business project after a purchase. When we first arrived, everyone wore suits and ties. Towards the end of the project, a Japanese man got on the elevator in crocs and all I could think was ‘what have we done.’ . (Also, they don’t crank the air over there, so shorts would have been nice)

I wouldn’t mind seeing some hairy male legs. If he shows a little chest hair, I’d consider that a bonus.

Got to side with the ladies here....the image of middle aged Japanese men in shorts is not one I would like to be seeing all day long.

But I think pubic hair is banned in most Japanese content, so it’s sort of like 50s playboy. In public probably isn’t appropriate I agree, and I don’t support that kind of exploitation in general, but I think it is pretty tame.

Areas where I hang out, if you wear shorts, you're just tick bait.

By the Beeb attempting to gin up a game of lets-you-and-him-fight in Japan...?

Nope.

I hope the Japanese refuse to play.
