House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was asked during a Capitol Hill press conference on Tuesday at what point he will move to use Congressional power to check President Donald Trump’s war in Iran. Johnson pointedly ended his reply by saying “we’ve got to wrap it up” in Iran, which many pundits and political insiders have warned is an additional threat to the GOP keeping its majorities in Congress.
Johnson’s answer appeared to be at odds with Trump, who vowed earlier in the day to continue bombing Iran until they come to the negotiating table in good faith.
“You repeatedly said that you trust the administration to handle the war with Iran. We’re now five months in, and the U.S. troop toll has surpassed that of the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Given that, at what point are you willing to put an AUMF on the floor, or vote for a War Powers Act resolution to try and remove it?” asked an off-camera reporter.
“The administration is working very hard — the commander-in-chief and the whole Department of War — they’re working very hard to bring this to a resolution. There’s a lot of discussion about how that will be done. We’re all closely watching those developments, of course. I don’t think an AUMF is in order right now. I think we need to bring it to a resolution,” Johnson replied, adding:
"Look, I think it’s important — in my personal view — for all of our international partners to have a role in this. I mean, we’ve got all of our allied nations, NATO, we’ve had the Arab countries over there, the Gulf states that are in closest proximity to Iran. Iran has now fired on all of its neighbors, and they’re turning everybody in the world into an enemy. So I think this is an important moment in history for the entire world community to decide how they want to handle this. It shouldn’t just be America’s obligation — my view is that everybody needs to play a role. So we’ll see how that develops. I think we have to allow the space to do that.
"And I know this administration is working around the clock to resolve that in a way so they don’t suffer any more troop losses. This is a great tragedy — it shouldn’t happen. But it is a very important objective, one that I believe we’ve achieved, to ensure that the largest state sponsor of terrorism does not have a nuclear weapon. That would be a disaster for everybody, and everybody around the world understands that.

If they will kill 30,000 of their own people, they will not hesitate to kill millions of "infidels."

I agree. I am not sure why we need to lose the war with Iran to keep our majorities on the house and senate. I am not sure why the slight inconvenience of having to pay a dollar more for a gallon of gasoline until the war is concluded should make us want to turn the country over to a bunch of communists....

That’s what it was. It bought the Iranians time and made them feel like they were in control. There was never any chance of the negotiations achieving any kind of enforceable resolution. And yet, it wouldn’t be a surprise if we went right back to the negotiating table again.
I think dead American soldiers is a big factor as well.

Its more than an inconvenience. Increased fuel prices have fueled inflation that is driving up the cost of everything that has to be transported as well as the cost of most services.
Preemptive wars are fine. But you better have a Plan A (or B, C, D, E, etc).
Bush 41 learned from Vietnam so we had our $#it together for Operation Desert Storm.
Only if you allege that Iran won't nuke people, and the evidence I have seen since 1979 convinces me, and should convince any sane person, otherwise.
They threw hundreds of thousands of their own people against Iraqi tanks in the Iran/Iraq war. They gave children little plastic "keys to heaven" and told them to find mines in minefields.
If you think they would not use a nuke weapon (probably against Tel Aviv first) you do not understand them.
And nobody in the United States should have any confidence in their government to get any of this right anyway.

We very likely have neutron bombs.
But using something like that would start a major arms race with Europe, Russia, China, India, and who knows whoever else.
If Trump wants to wrap it up, then he needs to give the order to pull the troops out. Obviously he wants to continue.
It hasn't been explained to them properly. They have no idea what sort of fanatics run that country, and what they will do if they have nukes and delivery systems.
The closest analogy is Kim Jong Un, and he's not even as fanatical as the Mullahs.

I believe a majority of voters want to do whatever is necessary to keep Iran from obtaining nukes.
That’s the question that should be asked of “America’s war”.
You of course would have done better. You would have been like Napoleon at Austerlitz, choreographing not only your own troop movements, but those of the enemy as well.
War is messy, and this one is essential. Certainly more essential than Afghanistan and Iraq. (I said so at the time.)
Iran has been a threat for many years and it probably always will be.
It wasn't a threat when the Shah ran it, but Carter screwed that up. I think we can keep killing the fanatics till Iran can't be a threat anymore.
And we should.
To me, “wrap it up” means finish kicking their asses.
How much are millions, perhaps tens of millions of lives worth?
Iran gets nukes. Iran nukes Tel Aviv. Israel responds by making Iran lifeless with their nukes. Other nations get involved. War escalates. Other powers start using nukes.
So as much as I like Trump's domestic policies, I much more greatly oppose mass death in the millions.
Nice to know where your priorities lie. Not with America First.
Nuclear exchanges between Iran and Israel would not be confined to just Iran and Israel.
It is in America's best interest to stop this before it happens.
