Mike Johnson Breaks With Trump On Iran War: ‘We’ve Got To Wrap It Up’
Mediaite ^ | July 21, 2026 | Alex Griffing

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was asked during a Capitol Hill press conference on Tuesday at what point he will move to use Congressional power to check President Donald Trump’s war in Iran. Johnson pointedly ended his reply by saying “we’ve got to wrap it up” in Iran, which many pundits and political insiders have warned is an additional threat to the GOP keeping its majorities in Congress.

Johnson’s answer appeared to be at odds with Trump, who vowed earlier in the day to continue bombing Iran until they come to the negotiating table in good faith.

“You repeatedly said that you trust the administration to handle the war with Iran. We’re now five months in, and the U.S. troop toll has surpassed that of the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Given that, at what point are you willing to put an AUMF on the floor, or vote for a War Powers Act resolution to try and remove it?” asked an off-camera reporter.

“The administration is working very hard — the commander-in-chief and the whole Department of War — they’re working very hard to bring this to a resolution. There’s a lot of discussion about how that will be done. We’re all closely watching those developments, of course. I don’t think an AUMF is in order right now. I think we need to bring it to a resolution,” Johnson replied, adding:

"Look, I think it’s important — in my personal view — for all of our international partners to have a role in this. I mean, we’ve got all of our allied nations, NATO, we’ve had the Arab countries over there, the Gulf states that are in closest proximity to Iran. Iran has now fired on all of its neighbors, and they’re turning everybody in the world into an enemy. So I think this is an important moment in history for the entire world community to decide how they want to handle this. It shouldn’t just be America’s obligation — my view is that everybody needs to play a role. So we’ll see how that develops. I think we have to allow the space to do that.

"And I know this administration is working around the clock to resolve that in a way so they don’t suffer any more troop losses. This is a great tragedy — it shouldn’t happen. But it is a very important objective, one that I believe we’ve achieved, to ensure that the largest state sponsor of terrorism does not have a nuclear weapon. That would be a disaster for everybody, and everybody around the world understands that.

"Now we’ve got to wrap it up."

It could be ended if we really had the balls to end it.
I am sure Trump wanted to hurt them, send a message, and then things would be better.
It’s not, and we need to end them. Soon. Let the real bombings commence. Now.

Unless there's a military breakthrough pronto, the erosion of the base will accelerate.

The anti war invertebrates are really anti Trump. If our POTUS was a Democrat or a RINO they would be all in for the war.

When/if the GOP turns tail and runs like the cowards they are, they will experience a slaughter at the polls in November.

Do you imagine the majority of voters want Congress to stand firm and back Trump's war?

This stupid war is a political disaster for the Republican Party, and will cost them dearly in November.

I do not care.

Neutralizing the threat Iran poses to us and the world is worth the sacrifice.

I hate the Democrats and I fear what will happen if they gain majorities, but Iran will start a nuclear war at it's first opportunity.

I'm not ready to trade millions of lives for political gain.

why should they if we’re willing to do the work?

Check out my post 115

The problem the warhawks have is that "We" are NOT willing to do the work.

There's no legitimate, Constitutional pathway to "get it done", and the longer Trump tries, the worse things will get.

People are not thinking about Biden. That was in the past. They are thinking about now because they are in the present. They have to budget for what is happening today. Gas prices have increased the cost of everything. Goods at the grocery store are getting smaller and the prices have gone up.

So many here like to deflect that it was worse in the past and that their guy (Trump) is a saint and can do nothing wrong. Trump has a lot of mistakes during this term and his fanboys think he can do no wrong.

That is the conventional wisdom. Maybe this time really is different:

There was a giant propaganda operation during WWII overselling our bombing effectiveness (Norden Bombsight etc). Almost every bomb now is accurate to a few feet. Navigation and electronic targeting intelligence (e.g. the pagers, the traffic cameras, drones,AI ) are also more advanced. Airstrikes in WWII didn’t decapitate German and Japan leadership like we did Iran the first day.

We are relying on the locals to mop up, and their disposition to us is also better than WWII. I think that the steps, logistics, psychological factors, materiel requirements, and timing can be predicted by people like Special Forces and Mossad. My guess is a lot is happening but the professionals know it takes months for insurgencies and revolution to work, thus the slow roll negotiation phase. And our side can’t talk about thatif they want it to work, unlike airstrikes.

That is what is known as a “false dilemma” logical fallacy. And nobody in the United States should have any confidence in their government to get any of this right anyway.

Trump kind of stepped in it. He got us into a pre-emptive war in the middle east with no clear exit strategy, just like a Bush would have.

I take a backseat to no one when it comes to who despises the Bushes and their idiotic foreign policies, but in both Iraq and Afghanistan they sought and obtained Congressional authorization before taking the country to war.

Trump didn't do that. He's a usurper like Clinton, Obama and Biden, who thinks the president can take the country to war at his pleasure and without Congressional authorization.

I'd rather be on the side of Washington, Hamilton and Madison, than on the side of Clinton, Obama and Biden.

Maybe we should give Iran a Nuclear bomb. Drop it over their capital and detonate it high enough to not kill a single person—only send out a massive electronic pulse that would fry all computers and electrical units—no power, no phones, no radios. Send them back to the 17th Century. They will kill each other, starve, and eat each other. Iran will become a page in history only.

You don’t even understand the underlying political influences here. I can’t speak for Freepers, but I can tell you that most Americans don’t give a sh!t about Iran.

Just look at the pictures of Berlin in May 1945. If someone had told me that an atomic bomb had
caused the destruction, I would not have doubted it. Germany did not surrender until the Russians
were knocking on the door of the Führerbunker.

Oh shush up tough guy. The war without decent and realistic planning and goals, is a mess. Everyone has figured that out by now.

Iran has been a threat for many years and it probably always will be.
