Mike Johnson Breaks With Trump On Iran War: ‘We’ve Got To Wrap It Up’
Mediaite ^ | July 21, 2026 | Alex Griffing

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was asked during a Capitol Hill press conference on Tuesday at what point he will move to use Congressional power to check President Donald Trump’s war in Iran. Johnson pointedly ended his reply by saying “we’ve got to wrap it up” in Iran, which many pundits and political insiders have warned is an additional threat to the GOP keeping its majorities in Congress.

Johnson’s answer appeared to be at odds with Trump, who vowed earlier in the day to continue bombing Iran until they come to the negotiating table in good faith.

“You repeatedly said that you trust the administration to handle the war with Iran. We’re now five months in, and the U.S. troop toll has surpassed that of the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Given that, at what point are you willing to put an AUMF on the floor, or vote for a War Powers Act resolution to try and remove it?” asked an off-camera reporter.

“The administration is working very hard — the commander-in-chief and the whole Department of War — they’re working very hard to bring this to a resolution. There’s a lot of discussion about how that will be done. We’re all closely watching those developments, of course. I don’t think an AUMF is in order right now. I think we need to bring it to a resolution,” Johnson replied, adding:

"Look, I think it’s important — in my personal view — for all of our international partners to have a role in this. I mean, we’ve got all of our allied nations, NATO, we’ve had the Arab countries over there, the Gulf states that are in closest proximity to Iran. Iran has now fired on all of its neighbors, and they’re turning everybody in the world into an enemy. So I think this is an important moment in history for the entire world community to decide how they want to handle this. It shouldn’t just be America’s obligation — my view is that everybody needs to play a role. So we’ll see how that develops. I think we have to allow the space to do that.

"And I know this administration is working around the clock to resolve that in a way so they don’t suffer any more troop losses. This is a great tragedy — it shouldn’t happen. But it is a very important objective, one that I believe we’ve achieved, to ensure that the largest state sponsor of terrorism does not have a nuclear weapon. That would be a disaster for everybody, and everybody around the world understands that.

"Now we’ve got to wrap it up."

Iran has been “2 weeks away” from having for 40 years.

You don't need to lie to make your point.

The midterms are not more important than making certain Iran can never get nukes. I want us to win the midterms, but if it is a contest between us winning the midterms and stopping Iran from getting nukes, I'll choose to lose the midterms every single time.

Vince Lombardi might describe this as the mindset of the biggest loser ever to cross his path.

Mainly because no American should have any confidence in their government to do any such thing as “make certain [INSERT COUNTRY HERE] can ever get nukes.”

This is the kind of nonsensical propaganda that you’ll find on Fox News … aimed at a neurotic female suburban Sean Hannity viewer with an IQ of 90.

The neocon and Israel First arguments aren’t going to fly if this keeps going into the fall.

It's not flying now.

Voters are motivated by perception. If they perceive a bad economy and another pointless regime change war, many will either swing Democratic or stay home.

I regret there are people who don’t realize this, but when the CIA and other communists infiltrate the patriot community, they always have cover.

Gas price was higher under Biden.

Iran should be defeated.

Turn the Congress over to democrats who want to destroy our energy industry and will send gas price soaring (until they can make gas illegal like they are doing in all their states?

Yeah that sounds like voters to me.

They have a great president including on oil policy. They will likely destroy his presidency and then spend two years asking “why are the democrats doing this?”

Because they are communists.

I’m not so sure the midterms are lost.

The method of communists is to infiltrate, because their ideology is too low IQ to sell at face value.

This circular firing squad stuff makes the irgc very happy.

I don't care what makes the IRGC happy or unhappy.

It's to our benefit to withdraw from this war. Whether that makes Iran ecstatic or indifferent or sad, it's still to our benefit.

Never should have gotten in to it in the first place. It has pretty much did a lot of damage to the agenda Trump laid out in 2024 for his presidency.

Wrong. Whatever horrible result you think you will see from having this war is nothing compared to the actually horrible result we would get from not having this war.

All you people bitching about this war are just ignorant of what sort of threat Iran poses.

You are all Neville Chamberlains trying to get "peace in our time" when you are dealing with an absolute fanatic who will never give you peace.

You people need to learn about what sort of fanatics rule in Iran. They would murder a billion "infidels" and wish they could have killed more.

Did you notice how Laura Ingraham panicked when she realized Trump’s May visit in China was strategic chess move against the CCP and the globalists?

We don’t give a sh!t. I’m more concerned about what sort of fanatics want to rule right here in the U.S. Take your Chicken Little alarmist propaganda somewhere else.

Iran should be defeated

OK, OK.

Why doesn't the Congress declare war on Iran, then?

I know you know why - because if they did, the Democratic landslide in November would be of titanic proportions.

So why don't you follow what you already know to its logical conclusion? A representative republic which has vested the War Power in the representatives of the People (House) and the States (Senate) has no business carrying out war of the size and scope you all keep yapping about without the consent of the People and the States, which is so obviously lacking that Stevie Wonder can see it.

If the US does not commit ground troops, history shows Iran can endure a bombing campaign for years.

Airplanes cannot destroy battleships.

Good point. We have made a good effort to straighten out Iran. Their neighbors are the ones who are suffering. Collectively, they can wield a lot of power, but why should they if we’re willing to do the work?

Yes, thank you. My point but add to that the number of pansies we have in this country now via indoctrination and importation.
