Multiple reports from Ontario, Canada, quoted local First Nations members this weekend stating that the government did not properly warn them about the catastrophic wildfires that have engulfed entire communities, nor has it offered adequate response to put them out.
“I’m really extremely angry with not just this government, but all levels of government, and the generations of underfunding that communities like mine have experienced, that emergency services have experienced,” Riley Yesno, a member of Eabametoong First Nation, told Canada’s CBC broadcaster in a report published on Sunday, calling the situation of the native communities of Canada “shameful.”
Yesno denounced a lack of critical firefighting infrastructure and investment on the part of both federal and local governments in the First Nations communities, many of which in Ontario are located in remote areas.
“It’s always just so difficult when the infrastructure that we have there, like in so many remote northern communities, is just so insufficient to deal with the level of crisis that they are experiencing or could very soon be experiencing,” Yesno explained. “The conditions in which they are dealing with, just in terms of air quality, are already poor — and there’s very little fire support there, too.” …

How did their pre-Columbian forebearers deal with wildfires?
Wildfires have been a natural part of the ecology for millions of years. A real Native American would know that.
I believe the indigenous people used to clean the forests of undergrowth but the greenie rules of the government probably don’t allow them to do that anymore.
They mostly didn't.
Putting out every small fire means that the fuel load grows every single year, until there is so much fuel that a small fire can't be put out.
Last year's fire scar is lush with herbs that don't support a conflagration, but are more of a firebreak.

They were actually very skilled in setting up what we would call now “controlled burns”.
It was the white man, who abandoned sound forest management for “saving the trees”.
Old wild west pictures show the woods being pretty sparse, so carriages could easily drew through them.
Since them the number of trees increased many times and so do forest fires.

That’s exactly where I was going. My memory might be faulty on this, but I seem to recall reading that certain tribes/nations used to conduct controlled burns. I might be wrong on that.

what did their forefathers do centuries ago.
Did they blame white europeans for all of their problems?
Did forest fires occur centuries ago?
Agreed, their forefathers prolly harvested the trees and gathered brush to build fires for cooking and warmth
It is one thing to set up prescribed burns in a prairie land. I think it is doubtful any meaningful attempts were made in rugged terrain. If you look at the population of Canada around 1700, it was virtually nil.
I hope it comes to light that not all of these wildfires were started without the help of ecoterrorists. I’m not saying that’s what happened but I am saying that if it has, I want it to be known.
