That’s exactly where I was going. My memory might be faulty on this, but I seem to recall reading that certain tribes/nations used to conduct controlled burns. I might be wrong on that.

It is one thing to set up prescribed burns in a prairie land. I think it is doubtful any meaningful attempts were made in rugged terrain. If you look at the population of Canada around 1700, it was virtually nil.
