It's only the THIRD biggest opening of the year, behind "Toy Story 5" and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie."
TRANSLATION: Not as good as a talking toy and a video game movie.
They don't tell you it likely needs around $800 million worldwide just to break even.
Not to make a profit.
Just to break even.
And the studio typically keeps only about 50–55% of the domestic gate - and less internationally.
And the $139.6 million from 73 international markets is absolutely DISASTROUS for the great Nolan when you consider that his own country, United Kingdom/Ireland, only spent $17.4M...
...with every other territory coming in way less.
And finally, they don't tell you that "Odyssey" only has one more CLEAR weekend before "Spider-Man" webs up the box office.
A huge opening?
Relative.
A financial triumph?
We shall see.

Hollywood will never admit that this movie was anything less than wildly successful.
$139.6 million from 73 international markets is absolutely DISASTROUS relative to the expectations, budget, and Nolan brand.
And even moreso when you consider Nolan's home territory, UK/Ireland, delivered only a measley $17.4M!
Other markets:

🇮🇹 Italy — $11.5M
🇦🇺 Australia — $9.2M
🇩🇪 Germany — $8.0M
🇮🇳 India — $7.2M
🇲🇽 Mexico — $7.0M

🇦🇪 UAE — $3.0M
And the remaining 63 smaller markets combined contributed about $52.7M - less than $1 million per territory.
For a $400M investment and a Nolan-level event film, these numbers should be much higher.

For those of you wondering if the Rotten Tomato system is reliable, it’s not. Reddit users dug into their data and found heavy manipulation. Nolan made a deal with Hollywood, if you go woke, you’ll be covered. Oscars incoming.

I don’t watch television, but I put my eyes on it as I pass one by in my travels and make a mental note of what it is. That seems to be a “big thing“…and for weeks now, it seems that the Odyssey has been“the big thing“. On all the usual places they’ve been pushing relentlessly.
I have been steadfast in saying, I will not see this movie until I can see it for free, and even then… But my opposition does not necessarily have to do with whether the movie has the elements to make it popular movie, or even the elements to make money.
My opposition has been from the moment I began to learn about how they cast the movie, and the things that come out of the mouse of the actors that were cast indicated to me that the casting was done to optimize the chances of an Oscar nomination for one, and for two, the characters discussions of their interpretations of their roles indicated that they viewed it widely as a woke interpretation. On both counts, I was repulsed by both the pandering and the woke comments.
It was a great disappointment to me to reach this conclusion, as I have wanted to see a interpretation of the Odyssey on large screen for years as it is one of my favorite books…I have read it and listened to it somewhere between five and 10 times. I have always hoped against who that someone would make a version of it that was worthy were watching, because CGI could really do it justice. I never could stomach the old version that looked like the monsters were portrayed using claymation.
Well, the tranny is far from the lead, but does play a role. What’s almost as bad is the black Helen of Troy. I don’t know about the rest of it, but I am definitely not interested in it, at all.

In a way, I agree with Rotten Tomatoes. If it gets a 100% score, I’ll be happy to throw tomatoes at the screen.
If Roger Ebert likes it, I don’t.
They based this movie on some womans feminist/misandrist translation of The Odyssey, so there is the major reason for the incredible suck, plus notice how important it was for Hollywoke to advertise cultural representation for the live action shot-for-shot Moana, but not for a European/Greek mythical story.
Dunno if he likes it, hes been dead since 2013. :)
I don’t have any investment in this movie failing.
We need some good movies.
We just watched Project Hail Mary,a huge hit which a friend liked. I thought it was pretty weak.

That article is embarrassing.
Actually, it is wildly successful. Some theaters were showing it around the clock. What is even more impressive is that it is almost a 3 hour movie, which means theaters show it one less time during the day, cutting into the box office. Theaters hate 3 hour movies for that reason.
It is already the 12th most popular movie of the year and it has been in the theaters only 3 days.
Some movie theaters have already sold out for the entire week. It is Nolan’s best opening globally and third best in the US after two of the Batman movies.
It received an “A” Cinema score from the movie goers, which means it will have legs in the weeks to come. The cinema score is very predictive of how well it will perform in coming weeks.
It will certainly finish with $1 billion worldwide and is attracting movie goers who do not frequently go to the movies - maybe once or twice a year, if that.
Then it gets sold to streaming services, cable, pay per view, purchases and rentals and little of that is shared with anyone - that will add up to several hundred million at least. And it will generate millions in the decades to come.
As an example, the first Mission Impossible movie with Tom Cruise still generates $10 million dollars a year in revenue just from people purchasing it - both physical and digital copies and digitally renting. All of that goes right to Paramount’s bottom line.
I guess it wasn’t gay enough for Mr Holte.
I would get up early to stand in a long, long line to not see this film.
I enjoyed the Odyssey story. I will not support Cultural Sabotage.
