“The Odyssey” didn’t need a Trojan Horse to break into the top of Friday’s box office charts.
Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” earned $51 million on Friday from 3,919 North American screens. Early estimates had the saga grossing $90 million to $100 million by Sunday, but after a stellar opening day, forecasts have the film climbing as high as $120 million. “The Odyssey” will soon become the third film in 2026 to open above $100 million after “Toy Story 5” ($159 million) and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” ($131 million). “The Odyssey” carries a hefty $250 million price tag.
An $120 million opening for “The Odyssey” would rank as Nolan’s best since “The Dark Knight Rises,” which debuted to a staggering $160 million in 2012. Weekend one projections for “The Odyssey” blow past Nolan’s 2023 best picture winner, “Oppenheimer,” which made $82 million over its opening weekend and powered to $975 million by the end of its run. Also, with $51 million on Friday, “The Odyssey” has already outgrossed the entire opening weekend of Nolan’s 2014 opus “Interstellar” ($47.5 million).

It’s pretty normal for a movie to get better reviews from the people chose to watch it than the reviewers. Largely because it’s a self selected audience, people who wanted to watch a particular movie will probably like it. Really when viewer score are low what that generally is that it wasn’t the movie they advertised. Might still be a good movie, but not what the viewers expected.
This first scene in the movie is Page getting killed. So no. And, as I said to somebody else, black Helen worked. She’s very striking, you can’t miss her in any of the 2 or 3 minutes she’s on screen and mostly not talking. There were probably other ways to accomplish that, but it did work, Helen’s presence looms larger than the actual on screen role.
I get antsy after one hour. I could not watch a theee hour movie. Even something great like Gine With The Wind gets an intermission! Movies are way too long for me generally.
Yeah it’s fine, the rape of your culture only lasts a few minutes.
Three and Gone, sorry, I need to proofread my posts
They are certainly trying to
Maybe the woke will embrace it
Google certainly has
I'm reading the mea culpas from people whose opinions I respect and who were sure the movie was going to suck now conceding that it's spectacular.
I may go see a weekday matinee showing on IMAX here in a couple of weeks when I have some time off from work.
Hard pass !
They use a Viking ship, not a Greek ship.
Off by centuries !
Mostly from expensive imax theaters.

Matt.... Damon....
I don't take Hollywood too seriously. I only ask to be entertained.
I'm less concerned with how much screen time "Elliot" Page has and more concerned with how many illegals were deported in the short time that I am watching her on screen.
Looking at "verified audience" ratings, the overwhelming majority of positive reviews marked as 'This is a verified review from a moviegoer that bought a ticket and wrote a review through Fandango. Probably not a surprise, given that Fandango owns Rotten Tomatoes.
These positive reviews are also, by and large, very basic one-liners. The critical reviews, meanwhile, tend to have more meat on them. They were also the only reviews I've seen that actually corresponded to Rotten Tomatoes user profiles (as in those who actually have accounts on Rotten Tomatoes itself). Unfortunately, their website's rating has horrendous filters, so you can't search by rating score.
Metacritic, meanwhile, is showing an audience user score of 5.0 out of 10.. IMDB has 8.4 out of 10.
At any rate, Rotten Tomatoes reliability for audience scores should have been torched after a laugher like this:
I can kinda see that working. Schwarzenegger was also favored to be in a film adaptation of I Am Legend that never got off the ground. Would have been much better than the Will Smith version.
She is not even a pretty black woman. She looks like a 15 year old boy. Gross. BUT we all know if a producer and director want to get Oscar’s they have to play the woke BS game.
I wish there was a Free Republic for less sophisticated people.
How convenient. Both matter, a lot.
With Nolan's name on it it is guaranteed not to be a massive bomb - even TENET (which I have not seen) which was supposedly impenetrable plot-wise and came out during the pandemic still made almost half a billion in box office. So even if this is a total piece of cinema garbage it will do huge numbers. Enough to make a profit who knows.
I wish there was a Free Republic for less sophisticated people.
There is. It is called Blue Sky and it provides refuge for those who need refuge from inconvenient reality.
The reviewers I trust say it is a pi@@ poor retelling of The Odyssey, and a confusing mess, with often unintelligible dialog, but visually stunning.
The Odyssey is famously nonlinear, and when Nolan applies his penchant for nonlinear story telling to it, the square cube law kicks in, and produces the sort of mess that many people consider sophisticated. Like women who pay hairdressers good money to make them look like they got of bed and rubbed balloons on their head to charge their hair with static electricity.
And apparently the rap music is a jarring, and awful, as was feared. Mel Books has written historical rap songs that fit his movies, but he is one of a kind.
You don’t have to be verified to post a review.Verified reviews are those posted by reviewers who bought their tickets on Fandango.
