Things got testy in a game between the Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres over the weekend. Home plate umpire Jen Pawol ruled that Padres hitter Sung-Mun Song didn't make his ABS challenge in time, resulting in Padres hitting coach Steven Souza Jr. being ejected after he took exception with the ruling.
Later in the game, the Blue Jays were heated with Pawol over a controversial balk ruling brought home a run for the Blue Jays.
After the game, MLB writer Dan Clark noted how much Pawol has struggled throughout the year with Grok, X's AI assistant for premium users, which, statistically, has her worse than controversial former umpire Angel Hernandez.

If she needs to improve, she needs to train in A Ball with the “Lansing Lugnuts” or similar.
All we have to do is stop Women’s Suffrage...
She is the 3rd worst umpire in the league for accuracy and consistency and CB Buckner is retiring this year. She was middle of the pack for her limited sample in 2025.
I would not assume that.
Calling a strike and a balk on the same pitch would be highly unlikely even for a pee wee league umpire, and she's been playing and umpiring for decades in softball, women's baseball, and in the minor leagues. If she hasn't "leared" it by now, she likely never will.

She’s likely already done, and not because of player or fan backlash, but because the gambling sites such as Fan Duel will see changed behavior in games she’s calling.
I don’t know how umpires or officials in other sports are evaluated.
In baseball, do they have cameras everywhere, so that each pitch is evaluated, and then they compare that with the umpire’s call of ball or strike on the pitch?
Then I know they have challenges on safe or out calls on the basepaths.
Just wondering if each umpire gets a percentage score or how this all works.
Just thinking too, that if umpires are shown to be wrong way too often, they should not be in this line of work.
I wonder too, this year they started the system of challenging balls and strikes, how often has the umpire been overruled on those challenges?
At all.
If you want a prime example of a terrible female announcer, listen to the Yankees radio tandem of David Sims and Suzyn Waldman. She will just not shut up. She talks over David with the most inane, unrelated drivel. She mutters to no one about things not germane to what is happening on the field. Sims doesn’t acknowledge her comments most of the time.
I’m not certain if she sees herself as a co play-by-play announcer or if she really is that obtuse and unaware of how she comes across on the broadcast.
I listen to the Yankees on SiriusXM. I will find their opponents braodcast channel and tune in there instead of listening to Suzyn. SHe makes my ears bleed.
Yep, that gray thing there is a ball.
My son, who died a few years ago, would be furious about this krep. He had season tickets to the Mariners and a season parking place too. took his baseball very seriously. I’m his mom and really enoyed games I saw with him. He explained it so well, the possibilities, which man on the field might do. what.
Sorry for the loss of your son. I hope to never go through that.
I recall and incident with Red Barber blathering about his dog when Mantle hit a prodigious home run to straight centerfield in the old stadium. 461 to the base and over the 30 foot wall. I don’t think he could see that far, announced the flyball to center, exclaimed it a homer and went back to his blather. Aggravated me to no end.
thank. I hope no one loses children but these things happen.
Bill lives in my heart.
You know your college football program has hit the skids if Beth Mowins is announcing your games.
Her gender doesn’t make her a bad umpire. Her skills make her a bad umpire.
Announcer? They shouldn’t even be voting!
