Love Riggo. I even had a little crush on him back then.
I still remember him showing up unannounced and hammered with a couple of friends on Joe Theiesmann’s weekly local TV show shortly after the Redskins won the ‘ 83 Super Bowl. It was hilarious.

Who are the Washington Commanders? Never heard of them. There once was a Washington Redskin football team but something happened to them.
John Riggins, the Pro Football Hall of Fame running back, was born in Seneca, Kansas, and grew up in the small town of Centralia, Kansas, where he attended Centralia High School. He went on to play college football for the Kansas Jayhawks at the University of Kansas.

When he was at Kansas, he was 6’2”, 220 lbs, an ran the 100 in 9.8 seconds.
Wow.
Later, his playing weight was rumored to be about 240-245, and he STILL had plenty of speed.
He wasn’t the biggest. He wasn’t the fastest. But he ws durable, had incredible balance, and did not shy away from contact. They said he just was so solid with great balance that he was nearly impossible to bring down.
I admired him greatly as a player.
John Riggins, Larry Csonka, Earl Campbell - there sure were some punishing RBs back in the day. Can’t be good for career longevity.
Riggins was quite the force back in the day.

Commanders…it’s better than “Washington Football Team” but not by much. They’re still the Redskins. I wonder if he finally got a house to live in. Last I heard, he was living in an RV in a storage unit in Chantilly, VA but that was in the 90’s.
I always root for the Washington Football Team to lose, no matter who they are playing.
He was (on air) a fantastic sports observer. So insightful and thoughtful.
His story of his high school and KU years is a dramatic read. I was at KU at that time and can confirm his dad and others pushex his brother forward most unfairly
