Our ship arrived at Samsun, Turkey on Thanksgiving Day. It would begin a great experience in Turkey with the wonderful Turks.
I had Shore Patrol the next day. I will never forget the experience. I had a mob of kids following me down the streets asking for an American cigarette. I had a fresh pack of Marlboros and willingly gave the older ones a cigarette. I shook my finger at he younger ones and said, “No cigarette! You’re too young.” There were a few who knew English and would interpret what I said. When one did, the crowd would laugh and wag their fingers at the grinning kid. We were having a goodwill Marlboro Summit.
On another night friends and I gathered in the evening in one of the shops managed by a guy our age who spoke English. We had a boom box and cassette tapes of rock groups like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The cassette player was on batteries and played many tapes. I bought a nice brass pouring vessel; which I still have to this day.
