I agree that Cristiano Ronaldo is driven to be the best, and for him individual records are something he needed to try proving it to himself. He is, however, an incredibly hard working competitor who gave all of himself to his sport. He is hardly the first or the only athlete for whom aging has been a difficult thing to accept. To be fair, he worked so hard all his life as an athlete (incredibly disciplined training, diet, etc.) that he is more like a 34 year old than a 40 year old. But he's not at the same level as he was when he and Messi were the two best soccer players in the world. That's OK. He'll come to grips with it.

That’s the problem right there. Ronaldo aimed too high. I myself shot for career goal of one in soccer. I achieved that in a pick-up game when I was 16.

Tragedy?! He has had a brilliant career and there is no denying his talent. He didn’t win a World Cup but many players don’t - it’s extraordinarily difficult. But one Euro Championship. Overshadowed by Messi to a certain extent certainly. But who wouldn’t be?!
Indeed it is. He is one of the greatest of all-time.... many such gifted players have a hard time walking away.

Unfair article. It is exceedingly difficult to win the World Cup. England has not won since the Beatles were at their peak. Ronaldo is one of the all time greats. They often don’t leave at the right time. Should still have respect.
