'Supergirl' suffers catastrophic 73% drop, gets obliterated at box office by patriotic 'Young Washington'

James Gunn was supposed to revamp and revitalize DC Studios at Warner Bros. The director of "Guardians of the Galaxy" would, in theory, bring the type of overarching creative vision that Kevin Feige had so successfully demonstrated at Marvel Studios.

Two movies into Gunn's vision of DC Studios, it's safe to say that this reboot has been an unmitigated failure.

The 2025 edition of "Superman" was, at best, a moderate success. While hardly the type of franchise-changing success the studio and Gunn hoped for, box office results and reviews were acceptable, if not a bit underwhelming. Thanks in some part to Gunn's bewildering decision to tell audiences that the film was about politics, calling the Superman character an "immigrant."

But the real test for Gunn's reboot and the power of the DC Studios brand was the follow-up film, "Supergirl," starring Milly Alcock. And boy has it failed the test.

Alcock spent most of the press campaign making herself as unlikeable as possible, insulting potential moviegoers, bizarrely claiming that audiences felt "ownership" of her body, then doubling down after the inevitable backlash. The trailers looked awful, with a predictably sloppy anti-hero feel, atrocious visual effects, and an uninteresting plot and villain.

Still, as recently as May, hopes were that "Supergirl" could make as much as $65 million in its opening weekend. In actuality? It made just over $37 million.

With a production budget of $175 million, and a massive marketing campaign that likely cost Warner Bros. at least $100 million, the film needed to reach at least $450-500 million globally to break even. That opening weekend, and an anemic international debut, meant it was tracking towards a significant loss. The only hope? That positive word of mouth would overcome the apathy towards the film's plot and the off-putting remarks from Alcock.

My understanding is that ticket sales just barely cover what the studio charges the theater for showing the movie. The deal usually includes keeping the movie on the screen for an extended run even if no one is buying tickets. That’s what killed the single screen theaters of yesteryear. We had to have multiplexes so that at least one or two hit movies would sell tickets.

That’s why the concession costs are so high. It’s the only way the theater can do more than break even.

the only thing that might save USA-movies is to stop wasting billions on super-hero movies that everyone has seen a bazillion times already, and make movies that have interesting stories, interesting characters, interesting dialog, and interesting sets, that is, original movies with high production values that appeal to large audiences ...

the above wouldn’t be difficult to do: there are thousands of fantastic novels that meet the above criteria that could be turned into great movies IF made by talented producers, talented directors, and other talented movie makers, IF they made their stories true to the novels ... such movies wouldn’t even be expensive to produce given how inexpensive modern digital equipment is ... “Companion” and “Drowning Mona” are examples of two “small” and inexpensive movies that are very entertaining ...

The WHOLE POINT of the version of 'Superman' that Gunn did was to deconstruct Superman into being the son of evil 'Master Race' types who is horrified to discover his 'real' heritage as a Kryptonian. I sat there in the theater looking at the screen [yes, I saw this at the movies] going "What the actual f**k?"

Yeah, that pissed me off too. Superman was created by Jews. They would be disgusted by what James Gunn did to their character.

I still plan on seeing the movie anyway. I was VERY disappointed with James Gunn’s Superman movie. As a kid in the 60s, I remember the superheroes very differently. Plus I thought they were miscast. Not happy with it at all.

James Gunn's Superman was pathetic. I wrote a critique of it in an earlier thread.

Henry Cavill was perfect, and only James Gunn would think replacing him was a good idea. Also, James Gunn's Superman spends the entire movie getting beaten up and disrespected, and Supergirl calls him a "bitch" at the end of the movie.

That movie was not at all in character for Superman.

honestly, I am just burnt out on the boss girl stuff. It was sort of unique waaaaaay back when it was buffy the vampire slayer, but they have just taken it so far. That now I dont even want to watch something like super girl, who justifiably should be powerful.

I don't mind it actually. But they're stupid with their casting (although you can argue that it is intentional) and yes, the writing sucks now.

Gal Gadot is 5'10. Pretty tall for a woman. Obviously that was why they chose her for the role of Wonder Woman.

Personaly it was entertaining. My takeaway is it laid the groundwork for developing a series that can offer stories about krypton and a dying world, other planets, and a relationship of an average girl and an all American super hero. Its main purpose may not have been a box office hit.

Lots of folks are looking forward to the next Spider Man movie. It’s. Produced by Sony, not Disney.
I heard Tom Holland may not be in any more Marvel movies. Fans will flock to it. It is based upon off a good comic story.
This we will go see. So the genre isn’t dead, it was hacked to death by woke morons.

Concur.

She was great in House of Dragon because House Targaryon are all inbred.

“Also, marketing which can cost almost as much as the movie itself is not factored in,”

It is factored in as 100 million of the 275.

Yeah that’s moronic thinking in action. One group is decidedly larger than the other. When you’re trying to sell something saying this isn’t for you is not exactly marketing 101.
