The film received mixed reviews from critics.

Of course there were negative reviews from critics - who believe the emphasis should have been on Washington as an "evil slave owner."

I started a thread on this movie yesterday at Young Washington Released Today (VANITY)

There is a lot of good discussion there too. I had the same impression you did!

But it says “mixed reviews from critics.” How could you possibly disagree with “critics”?

We saw it yesterday.
Packed theater at all shows yesterday.
Audience applauded at the end of an excellent movie.

Americans are proud of our heritage.

Libs and commies hate the Country.

Movie fails completely to portray Washington as a man of faith. That’s what made him so great.

Of all the books he is depicted as having read, I don’t think the bible was mentioned once.

Spoiler Alert!

Washington takes a bullet at the end of the French Indian War, and dies in Martha’s arms.

I saw it today. I thought it was very well done. Made it very clear that Washington chafed under the stratified British society and that ambitious people who wanted to do well for themselves would need to create a society with more Liberty. Also (of course) showed Washington as a military leader of rare character and brilliance. Very patriotic. I really had no complaints at all.

The decision of Washington to reject becoming America’s first king, despite being urged to do so by many powerful colonists, after the defeat of the British is regarded by scholars as the defining moment that launched the new democratic republic. It’s very likely that he could have successfully seized power but instead took a principled stand to allow the American “experiment” to proceed. I saw the movie yesterday and enjoyed the overall celebration of the man while yearning for more detail. It could have been much more detailed but I guess there’s only so much you can fit into two hours.

Does the movie show how Washington started the first ever World War by firing on a French soldier during the French & Indian War?

A good follow up from viewing the movie would be to watch/listen to Mike Rowe’s podcast interview with Jon Erwin that was posted yesterday. Interesting and worth the time, IMO. In the conversation, Erwin reveals that his grandfather received the Medal of Honor in WW2 for heroism on a bombing run in a B-29. Rowe encourages Erwin make that story his next film.
