Daughters of the American Revolution Live Up to Their Name by Rejecting Ban on Trans Women

The Daughters of the American Revolution officially rejected a proposed ban on transgender women from joining the organization on June 26.

The long-awaited vote came after years of pressure within the DAR — a nonprofit historical preservation and education society created in 1890, composed of women with direct ancestry to soldiers in the American Revolutionary War — to exclude trans women from the organization’s definition of “woman,” which would effectively ban them from its ranks.

In 2023, the DAR officially amended their guidelines to include language that protects trans members against discrimination in the application process, per The Washingtonian.

“Some have asked if this means a transgender woman can join DAR or if this means that DAR chapters have previously welcomed transgender women,” Pamela Rouse Wright, President of the DAR, wrote in a newsletter on the bylaws. “The answer to both questions is, yes.”

It’s very easy to find, under ‘Who We Are’:

They do know. But they are all about “feelings”.

I don't know who runs the DAR, but I imagine they are heavily concentrated in the Northeastern and South Atlantic states and are to a great extent middle class or better women from suburban areas who belong mainly to liberal mainline Protestant churches. Their mothers and especially their grandmothers were Rockefeller Republicans in the Northeast and Bourbon Democrats in the South Atlantic states. The Northern branch of these voters, who kept places like the Philadelphia Main Line, the Hudson Valley, and Northern New England solidly Republican until the 1960s, has now affiliated with the Democrats. The Southern branch defected early to the Republicans, but disapproved of the rise to power of evangelicals from the upland South in the GOP.

That is an interesting group of women.

They clearly like to keep a lot close to the vest.

I don’t like to see that in an organization that accepts donations.

Maybe they’re just trying to avoid being lawfared into oblivion like the guy who refused to bake a homo wedding cake.

The Fathers of the American Revolution would have invented wood chippers just to deal with this - if they even could have imagined it in the first place.

Click ‘Discover’ and then ‘About’ and then you’ll see ‘Who We Are’. Scroll down to ‘NSDAR Management’.

It’s pretty typical form for websites like that.

They’ve been around for a very long time. There’s not much that’s ‘secretive’ about them.

The “trio of misfits” did not magically appear out of nowhere.

Many Freepers do not want to find out the history behind the “trio”—it will destroy one of their sacred cows.

My family qualifies and some members, but this is BS. We also qualify for and are members of the colonial dams of the 17th century. I wonder if they are messed up as well.

The D.A.R.lings chatter like starlings
telling their ancestors’ names,
while grimly aloof, with looks of reproof,
sit the Colonial Dames.
The Cincinnati, merry and chatty,
dangle their badges and pendants;
but haughty and proud, disdaining the crowd,
brood the Mayflower descendants.

A little ditty my mother, a CD, used to recite.

trying to avoid being lawfared...

Like the Boy Scouts.

My grandmother, mother, wife and daughter are members of DAR.

What a crappy to end an institution.

My family and I qualify as well and several have been members. I was interested when I was young - the DAR chapters do a lot of very good work - but I grew to have different feelings about hereditary organizations in general.

As for the trans thing, it seems very odd and unlike them. Maybe they’re remembering the Marian Anderson debacle and are overreacting.

Eleanor Roosevelt was a member of the DAR but quit over the Marian Anderson thing, which really hurt the image of the DAR (but may have been the decision of one person or a handful of people).

The Sons of the American Revolution was founded a year before the DAR--the DAR was founded when the SAR would not let women join.

As far as I know, the issue of women claiming to be men and wanting to join the SAR has not arisen, at least not yet.
