The MONTHLY Victory Garden Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Victory Garden Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
I would do it too.
Yum! I’m so excited about having shishitos again. I wish I could grow the mammoth ones like they had in Oregon last year. Maybe I’m just impatient and should delay picking some to see how big they’ll get.
I’d do exactly what you’re doing. Rinse off beans, cook more, add a different dressing. I don’t mind learning from my mistakes. It helps me improve the next time.
I remade the 3-bean salad with a different dressing that had red wine vinegar, olive oil, dijon, garlic, scallions & some sweetener. It’s a flavor profile I like & the beans are very tasty. I’d call the do-over a success :-)
Hurray! My mouth is watering just thinking about it!
Yea! A great example of waste not want not. (Although the chickens do deserve some treats).
Excellent. That dressing sounds so much better. Dijon in for the WIN! :)
‘Two Fat Ladies’
If you’ve never seen any of their BBC episodes, treat yourselves. They are SO funny and such amazing cooks with great adventures.

Loved watching those!
I watched the ‘Pony Club’ episode :-)
PENNE IN VODKA SAUCE / on the table in no time
Ing: 1/4 lb minced pancetta (no substitute) 1/4 c butter 1/3 c vodka
1/2 c Parm 16 oz penne 1 1/2 c h/cream 15 oz can tomato sauce
Method: Brown pancetta a bit in foaming melted butter 2-3 min. Stir in/cook vodka 1-2 min (burn off alcohol). Stir in tomato sauce 5-8 min. Add cooked, drained penne. Add Parm, mix; well 2 min. Serve 4-6 garnished w/ chp basil leaves. more Parm.
I watched the first episode again last night. All about fish. I’d never in a million years make a Fish Pie or that Flounder, but Jennifer and Clarissa are so entertaining!
When they were first broadcast we watched every episode. Our favorite was when they cooked for a monastery.
Today Beau is finishing up his ‘Honey-Do’ list and getting the barn organized so I can take over the care of Emma Jolene, the chickens, Jennifer Cooniston and Ithaca.
Then he’s packing 10 dogs and all his stuff and heading for Bear Training Camp until the 17th. (*SILENT HUZZAH!*) Then he’s hopefully bringing ‘Omaha’ (new Walker Dog puppy) home to me for the rest of the summer.
The cats and I have been enjoying our reclaimed front porch. Lots of reading, coffee drinking and bird watching has been happening.
This morning I tied up tomatoes (those panty hose and knee high nylons Mom gave me are perfect - even better than cut up t-shirts, which is my usual go-to) and spot watered. Storms tonight and into tomorrow, so I didn’t do a full watering. It’s humid; hitting 86 today.
Lost power yesterday morning for about an hour - French Fried Squirrel, per my Alliant Energy Man. ;)
I also need to prune suckers on the Maple tree and my Crab Apple - forgot to do them when I did all the fruit trees. There are some dead Lilac branches that keep hitting me in the FACE when I mow past them so they are leaving, too!
The ‘mulch project’ will continue in the cooler morning hours; one down, 11 bags to go!
I mowed yesterday - I just mowed on Friday - but we’re hitting ‘High Grass Season’ for sure. I also want to tackle the North tree line - we suddenly have a lot of scrap trees growing between the Evergreens, and they are still small enough for me to lop off, so best get to that ASAP - another cool morning chore.
Indoor chores for the rest of the week include, but are not limited to:
Clean out Spices and order what is needed (The Spice House!)
Set up my NEW coffee pot - old one is on her last legs
Finish up my crocheted baby blanket for the County Fair
Make and can Blueberry Pie Filling (The test run pie was AWESOME!)
Water Houseplants
Grocery Run
Pedicure - desperately needed! Eeek! LOL!
I watched ‘Fish’ ... makes me wish I had a fresh source for fish & other seafood.
Be sure and post a picture of the blanket.
Here's my drying rack in the garage. There's a 24/7 fan, it's a pretty cool dry area.
Very nice set up and big heads. I’ve got German too. I am 30 minutes east of Grand Rapids.
