117 dead dogs found at California 'no-kill' animal rescue - many with gunshot wounds

Investigators have found the remains of 117 dogs in various states of decomposition - many of which were found with gunshot wounds - on the grounds of a purported "no-kill" animal shelter in northern California.

Authorities excavated open fields at Miranda's Rescue Animal Sanctuary for evidence of animals believed to be buried in mass graves, the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said. About 600 dog collars were also located.

Officials had been investigating potential fraud or animal cruelty after hundreds of animals were discovered missing from the facility.

The sanctuary owner has asked the public to "consider all the facts before reaching conclusions".

The shelter's owner and operator Shannon Miranda has said in an online statement before the discovery on the property that media coverage and online commentary about the case "have presented an incomplete and, in some cases, inaccurate picture" of the facility.

The BBC has reached out to the rescue. Miranda is not facing any criminal charges in the probe.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office began investigating the rescue in April after receiving "credible information" regarding allegations of felony animal abuse, animal cruelty, fraud, and conspiracy associated with Miranda's Rescue.

Most "no kill" shelters actually do kill. And a shot to the head is much more humane then starving the poor pooch to death.

However if you say you are no kill you should indeed not kill the animals placed in your care by either active or passive means.

No surprise. These rescues came about from the usual socialist scams. They’d shout “puppy mill!” to denigrate commercial pet stores, many of which closed.

Now we have “rescues” run by leftists, which is why so many bad behavior dogs, that would’ve been put down by the old stores, are pawned out from the rescue to unsuspecting owners.

“No Kill” normally applies to shelters that euthanize less than 15% of their animals. There are some dogs that can not be allowed around other dogs or people. Some are terminally ill and death is close. “No Kill” is not absolute.

Killing an animal is not abuse.

Vets do it all the time and laugh all the way to the bank.

Exactly correct. Humanely putting down an animal is possible and not difficult. In rural areas it happens frequently. Farmers would go bankrupt if they paid a vet to kill every animal which needed to be killed.

All animals die. All. Most die with much more pain and suffering than those which are killed by humans.

She explains they are not an absolute “no kill” shelter. They have been in operation for 30 years.

I can't blame her. Pet owners are the problem. The numbers of abandoned dogs is rising exponentially due to irresponsible owners. They don't fix their animals and shouldn't own dogs in the first place.

Shelters locally, (Tulsa county) are full to the breaking point. This overflow will be transferred to a kill shelter ultimately.

There is something morally wrong with elevating dogs/any animal with people. On my brother’s mantel he has 3 cremated dogs and his mother-in-law. He is confused.

Exactly right. Dogs are not people. A significant amount of this is in the identification of pets with children.

It is a dangerous trend to equate pets with children, yet many call their pets “fur babies” or similar terms.

I understand people develop strong emotional bonds with pets. However, the pet is still an animal.

It IS like socialism.

They promise what they can’t deliver.

And I disapprove for that exact reason.

Either have adequate funding sources or don’t say you’re no-kill.

And the homeless in LA have dogs acting as “the canary in the coal mine”.

They shoot the dogs with drugs to test to see if there’s fentanyl. If the dog dies, no fentanyl. If the dog lives, it’s still been loaded with drugs.

The only candidate (that I know of) who has exposed this is Spencer Pratt. And per AI:

“Animal rights groups and rescue volunteers on Los Angeles’ Skid Row have documented and raised the alarm about instances of homeless individuals injecting or feeding drugs to dogs to test if the substances are laced with deadly fentanyl.”
