Investigators have found the remains of 117 dogs in various states of decomposition - many of which were found with gunshot wounds - on the grounds of a purported "no-kill" animal shelter in northern California.
Authorities excavated open fields at Miranda's Rescue Animal Sanctuary for evidence of animals believed to be buried in mass graves, the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said. About 600 dog collars were also located.
Officials had been investigating potential fraud or animal cruelty after hundreds of animals were discovered missing from the facility.
The sanctuary owner has asked the public to "consider all the facts before reaching conclusions".
The shelter's owner and operator Shannon Miranda has said in an online statement before the discovery on the property that media coverage and online commentary about the case "have presented an incomplete and, in some cases, inaccurate picture" of the facility.
The BBC has reached out to the rescue. Miranda is not facing any criminal charges in the probe.
The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office began investigating the rescue in April after receiving "credible information" regarding allegations of felony animal abuse, animal cruelty, fraud, and conspiracy associated with Miranda's Rescue.

I will consider all the facts.
You say you’re a no-kill facility.
You kill hundreds of animals.
I judge you harshly. VERY harshly.
Coming out of CaliFUBAR ... no surprise.
Must be affiliated with PETA.
Here is a statement by Shannon Miranda, Founder of Miranda’s Rescue:
She explains they are not an absolute “no kill” shelter. They have been in operation for 30 years.
Look on the bright side.
Maybe they were all Pitbulls.
Flame away ...
Why? What if they had no resources to feed or house the dogs, and thus had to ration their resources?
Do you imagine that socialism works when applied to animals? That if a shelter promises to be "no kill" then the needed resources will suddenly appear by magic?
But you PROMISED unlimited free health care, free housing and free food for all dogs! You PROMISED!
I guess she had her fingers cross behind her back When she said they were no-kill.
Should say, to all animal and child abusers....
Y’know, you could very well be right. Animal shelters are absolutely loaded with pitbulls and “pitbull mixes.” Animal lovers aren’t rushing to adopt them.

Shannon Miranda explains there are some animals that must be killed because they cannot safely exist with other animals or people. She gives examples of animals they took in. One killed a cat, then broke free and attacked a dog. Another became fixated on a baby carriage and attempted to attack the baby.
The animals had to be put down. Have such animals arrive at a facility every couple of months, and over 30 years you have over 300 animals which have to be put down. Add in animals suffering with terminal illness, and you have the possibility of hundreds more.
Such is a simple reality of life.
There had to be a money stream, a payment(s) for services...a contract, if you will. Perhaps an advertised pay-for-service implied contract. So, there was likely some sort of fraud here.

Thanks for the link. 30 years in operation, yes, there is no doubt that terminally ill, old and crippled, or incurably violent dogs are best to be put out of their misery.
Did this outfit go beyond those reasons? I don’t know, but my dad was an only child and his dog was his best friend until he was out on his own and married. For 85 years he still always had a dog, but knew when to put it down: one had cancer, several simply died of old age, another attacked the milk man (who had kicked it).
48 years ago I was 23, single, and no dog, bachin it in an old farmhouse. Once, I came in from working until dark in the fields, and found somebody had given me their dog.
It was old and suffering, could hardly raise its head. The owner probably didn’t want to be the one to put it down. I did, and then buried it.
Killing an animal is not abuse.
Vets do it all the time and laugh all the way to the bank.
BBC is making a big deal over this, for folks living in a Muslim country. The only people really harmed may be a few select, authentic Chinese restaurants.
Yes, the pit/pit mix dogs are risky to be around. I was checking the spring in our woods so see how well it was flowing, my walking stick: a sharp 5-point pitchfork.
I turned to see a neighbor’s pit stalking me. I looked at him, lowering the fork, pointed in the direction of his home, and loudly said repeatly, for a few seconds, “Go home!!”
I was almost hoping he would charge me, so I could eliminate a neighborhood threat.
Yes, I read somewhere that the owner was taking overflow animals off of the local rescue organizations for money. He wasn't supposed to be killing any.
Yes, the difference is they did not cremate them to put them in a box so that someone can keep “Honey” on the mantel.
Honey was my wife’s first beagle. She lived to be 14. She now resides in a small wooden box on the shelves in the family room.
We had to give up our Yellow Lab named Joe. At the age of two he became very aggressive. Tried to kill our cats. Would growl and bark at our daughter. When Joe scared the crap out of the little neighbor girl he took a one way trip to the No kill shelter. They had him for a couple weeks until he tried to bite a couple of the staff. He was the first dog they put to sleep. Some dogs have a screw loose.
